Description of the walk

Park at the Étang de Hanau car park, near Philippsbourg.

(S/E) Walk past the restaurant and continue for about a hundred metres.

(1) Turn right onto the path marked with a Red Diamond and join a wider forest track.

(2) Take this track, which heads due south, to reach the Rochers du Kachler: please observe the signs prohibiting access during the nesting season.

(3) Continue to the left.

(4) Carry on straight ahead, towards the Col du Kachler.

(5) Once at the pass, take the Blue Ring marked trail which descends to the right, towards the Étang de Lieschbach. Further on, turn right to descend into the valley: the IGN map is incorrect at this point. Once in the valley, turn right to reach the jetty on the lake.

(6) Retrace your steps and continue straight on.

(7) Turn right, cross the Ruisseau de l’Étang de Lieschbach, then turn left onto a forest track. You’ll come to a three-way junction.

(8) Take the path to the left (marked with a Blue Ring) and continue to a forest car park.

(9) Follow the Chemin des Pionniers, which climbs to the left towards the Steinberg, keeping to the Blue Ring markings. You’ll reach a junction.

(10) Carry on to the left, towards the Col du Kachler, and head for the pass.

(5) This time, take the Blue Cross-marked path which descends to the right, towards the Étang de Hanau.

(1) Carry straight on, passing the restaurant again, to return to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk that we did with our three dogs (dog walking). The route is relatively flat, which wasn’t a problem for our four-legged friends, who were new to walking. We set off at 11.30 am and started to see a few other people around 2.00 pm. Even at -3°C, the paths were very easy to walk on. I’d recommend this walk for all levels ☺️

Hike completed within the times stated.
On two occasions, the marked path was blocked due to forestry work. Please note that this work is not announced in advance.
No difficulty in following the route; personally, I transfer the GPX file to my own GPS.
A lovely, easy route to follow, with wide paths – very pleasant.
Thank you
