Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert with a difference

This hike is a great way to discover Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert in a different way, arriving via the Cirque de l'Infernet, without long lines of cars or queues at the car park.
Following a fire on 5 April 2023 on the heights of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and Saint-Jean-de-Fos, the route remains passable but the PR® des Fenestrettes is affected, as is the Arles road (GR®653). Please check with the Saint-Guilhem – Vallée de l'Hérault Tourist Office for information on the passability of the route.

Description of the walk

Park at the side of the D122.

(S/E) Leave the starting point via the wide path that begins to descend. 300m further on, leave the path that will be the return route on your left.

(1) 200 metres further on, you will come to a fork. Take the right towards Max Nègre (viewpoint) and Les Plos. You will start to climb. The path is concrete (emergency access) and walk for about 1.7 kilometres, leaving a path on your left.

(2) 400m after the highest point, turn left to reach Max Nègre (signposted). Enjoy the view of the cirque below you.

(3) Continue along this yellow-marked trail until you reach a GR® trail.

(4) Turn left and continue for about 1 km on this path, which descends steeply, until you reach another remarkable viewpoint.

(5) Continue down the wide switchbacks to reach theGR®65, which we will use for the return trip.

(6) At the intersection with theGR®, leave it on your left and continue downhill. You will clearly see the bottom of the valley, but not yet Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Another 1.2 km of easy walking, but busy, and you're at the bottom.

(7) On your left, as you enter the valley, you will find various rest areas and picnic spots. On your right, you will be heading towards the town, whose main square is 50m ahead of you.
this is a very touristy town with many shops, but you can also stop for a drink or a bite to eat.
The most important sight is the Benedictine Abbey of Gellone and its Romanesque church on the Way of St James. You can enter through the porch directly from the main square. You can visit the church, the cloister and the refectory, which has been converted into a museum.
On leaving, be sure to walk around the building on the left (facing the gate) via a narrow street, turn right, walk along the church and admire its beautiful Romanesque chevet

(8) Return in the opposite direction, cross the crowd on the main square and walk up the street. Leave theGR®74on your right, which offers another return route with more elevation gain and distance.

(7) Start of the uphill trail. Take this trail.

(6) Turn right onto the path marked in yellow at this point, which is theGR® 653. You are now in the Cirque de l'Infernet. There is a climb, a short descent, then another climb with an S-bend and stone walls supporting the path.

(9) Continue along this very easy path, which is partially shaded.

(10) Leave the steeply ascending trail on your left, which joins the morning route. Take the trail on the right, which climbs steadily. After 800 metres, a path appears on your right (slightly behind you).

(11) Leave it and continue straight ahead. 500m further on, take the path opposite you rather than the track that turns left up a steep hill and rejoins the crossroads you passed at the start of the walk.

(1) The path climbs gently through a small valley called Ravin de la Côte and joins the morning path a little further on. Turn right. You only have about 200m to go to reach the D122 and the starting point (S/E).

Practical information

To reach the starting point of the hike, take the D122 between Montpeyroux and Arboras. The bend is tight but the road is well maintained. The D122 is narrow but quiet and in good condition.
Make sure you locate the starting point (map or GPS point). There is parking for around six cars.

There is no water on the route, except in the town and its shops.
Standard equipment, preferably high-top shoes, hats and sunglasses (it can be very sunny), walking sticks are a plus.

Alternative: There is another option for the return journey, taking the northern route from Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert on theGR®74 trail, then passing Cap de la Pousterle, which will take you back to this circuit at the point (11).
This route is longer and has more elevation gain. It will be described in another article.

In the nearby area

Take the time to enjoy the views, not only at the viewpoints but also throughout the hike.
Please note that there is no view down onto Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert; you will only see it once you reach the bottom of the valley.

BE A GOOD CITIZEN: Be vigilant about fire safety and eco-friendly behaviour.

A different way to discover St Guilhem is to access it on foot from a few kilometres upstream, which also allows you to discover the Cirque de l'Internat.

A beautiful hike, fairly easy. I was apprehensive about the long descent because I have knee problems, but the slope is quite gentle. Lovely views, varied vegetation (it's springtime), and shaded areas that must be pleasant in summer. The break in St Guilhem halfway through the hike is very nice before tackling the climb. The hike was busy because there was a trail run taking place that day, but if you only count the hikers, it was very reasonable (on a Saturday in mid-May)

You can leave your car at the side of the road, as there are several places where you can park 3-4 vehicles. The road is a bit narrow but suitable for a standard-sized vehicle. However, the ambulance driver who came for the trail run had a bit of trouble.

Actual walking time: 12.5 km, a little less than 4 hours, walking at a leisurely pace and taking photos, not including the lunch break and the break in the village.
A very pleasant day.

A beautiful hike that takes you to Saint-Guilhem in a peaceful setting without having to pay for parking.
The best part is stopping for a crêpe or a meal in this gorgeous village, which needs no introduction.
Hiking boots are essential, and there are some beautiful views and few people on certain parts of the trail.

Beautiful hike in the sunshine.
Magnificent landscapes
Easy despite the elevation gain.
There were about ten of us with different levels of fitness, and some were worried before we set off.
Everyone was delighted when we arrived.

A beautiful hike that allows you to explore most of the Cirque de l'Internet via the Fenestrelles trail without paying for parking, while also visiting Saint Guilhem.
Magnificent landscapes and spectacular views.
We did it under rather threatening skies, with hardly anyone on the circuit but crowds of people sitting at tables in Saint Guilhem.
There are very few places to sit under the plane trees: many restaurants have restricted seating or closed altogether.

An extraordinary hike under a beautiful sun. The section of the trail that crosses the burned area is quite short and does not detract from the beauty of this hike.
We came across quite a few people for a Tuesday, but it has to be said that this place is magnificent (the village is really pretty)
Thanks to the author of this itinerary

Very beautiful hike. We did it in magnificent weather, which made it even better. We met a few people, especially above St Guilhem, but it wasn't crowded; fantastic. No parking fees, but the Lavagnes road is narrow, which would probably be difficult for a motorhome

Hello
I answered no to the last question because we went hiking yesterday, Monday 15 January 2024.
I think it must be busier at the weekend!
Plus, it avoids the car park at Saint Guilhem Le Désert, which is a rip-off!
I recommend this hike for a different approach to the Fenestrette circuit!
Best regards.

As we know the region well, we didn't always follow the Visorando route
Thank you for posting the routes online. We try to avoid, as far as possible, or in small groups, driving on roads marked as private, which we do not recommend for groups

A very beautiful hike punctuated by stunning panoramic views. Lunch in the village after visiting the abbey. Be careful of the heat during summer.

Thanks to the author of this hike, it allowed us to reach Saint Guilhem without having to walk with all the other groups leaving from there. The hike is really beautiful and varied, with views of the Cirque Infernet, which is magnificent!
The route is easy to follow, no problems at all.

Hello

We chose the "Les Diablotins" accommodation (highly recommended for its friendly welcome)*

It is located in St Jean de la Fosse. For this reason, we preferred the hike to the Belvédère du Berger, which is more accessible

The view is well worth it!

For the St Guilhem hike, we will be leaving from the village Your suggested starting point is interesting, but the road to get there is difficult and the travel time means we won't be able to hike for as long as we had planned

Thank you nevertheless for all the suggested hikes. They always give us some very interesting ideas

Best regards

Anne G
