Description of the walk

Depart from the Sarras gymnasium car park, after the school, Rue des Écoles.

(S/E) Head towards the D86 and, after the school, turn left onto the path and then take the footbridge over the Ay. Immediately afterwards, turn left and, at the cross street, turn left again onto Route de Revirand.

(1) Follow this road uphill until you find the start of a path on the right (sign) after about 200 m. Follow this path as it climbs up the rocks and joins the hamlet of Revirand.

(2) Ignore thefirst pathdown to Silon and follow thesecond path up to the right. Climb up the hillside to reach the plateau. Continue along a path that crosses vineyards, then descends slightly and joins a road. Follow it to the right and, at the left-hand bend after the house, continue straight ahead on a track. Reach the start of a path on the right at the corner of the vineyards.

(3) Follow this path downhill to the right.

(4) When the path turns sharply left, walk to the top of the rocky outcrop on the right and back to enjoy the view (round stone shelter).
Then continue along the path on the hillside, which then climbs up the ridge of the next hill. After leaving the woods and walking alongside the vineyards, you will reach Route Saint-Joseph. Follow this road to the right for a few metres until you reach the start of a path that climbs up to the left.

(5) Follow this path. Join a track and descend, following it as it winds down to the bottom of the valley. Ignore the road on your left and continue to a place called Le Marliet. Ignore it and continue along the path, which makes a sharp right turn.

(6) At the hairpin bend to the left that follows, continue straight ahead and then follow the canal of an old mill that joins the bed of the Ay.

(7) Walk along the river, taking care (slippery rocks, ramp and rope), then take the path
on the right that climbs steeply, following the steps (built by Sarras Randonnée). You will come to a field planted with vines. Follow it for about 50 metres.

(8) Leave the edge of the vineyard and continue into the woods on the left. Continue to the next intersection.

(9) Turn left for a round trip to the cross with its viewpoint.

(9) On your return, continue left, reach the plateau and turn left onto the cross-country path. Walk alongside the vineyards on your right and the meadows on your left, then continue straight ahead until you reach a road. Follow it to the left and you will reach a four-way crossroads.

(10) Turn right onto Route des Combes and follow it until you reach a sharp left-hand bend. Continue straight ahead on the descending path (no motor vehicles allowed) and follow the top of the ridge to reach La Cance. Cross the bridge and you will reach the road above the hamlet of Assuis.

(11) Turn right and follow it for about 500 metres until you find the start of a path on the left a few metres before the left-hand bend.

(12) Follow this path, which quickly turns left and climbs along the top of the shoulder. Continue to the next fork about 100 metres higher up.

(13) Take the path on the right, which runs flat until it reaches a hairpin bend in the road. Follow the road downhill, then climb over the safety barrier and find a faint path before the radio relay station.

(14) Descend this small path between the rocks and join the Route de Cantieux along the edge of the Cance. Turn left and reach the D86.

(15) Cross the bridge over the Cance with caution, then take thefirst path on the left. Pass under the railway line and continue straight on until you reach the first houses in Silon. Continue straight ahead on the path that follows the edge of the Rhône, pass under the railway bridge, cross the D86 diagonally with caution and follow the street in the wrong direction. Join the route taken at the start.

(1) Take the same route back to the car park at the Sarras gymnasium (S/E).

A beautiful walk. The route alternates between vineyards, forest and rivers. Few tarmac roads, especially in the first half of the walk. I recommend wearing trousers and long sleeves for the first half of the walk, which is quite overgrown with brambles. The climb is very strenuous once you get away from the river bank (about halfway up) and the path isn't always very visible. The same applies at the start of the hike when you're in the middle of the vineyards, where you have to take a path that's not really visible at all. Without the tracking app, I would have missed it completely. Once you've climbed back up after the river, the walk becomes much less technical and you start to see a bit more tarmac road. Be careful, though, as you're joining a busy main road, especially at the bridge, where there's no side road for pedestrians. What's more, you'll have to cross.

I recognised this hike because I plan to lead it with a group from my club, "Lei Esclops-St-Pérollais".
This hike is quite beautiful, with constant variation between the balconies and banks of the two rivers, between vineyards and plateaus. The sections along small roads are not too disruptive because the views make you forget them.
These two valley ends or gorges (we are approaching the Rhône) are really very interesting, with my preference for the Ay valley.
Please note and take care with a group:
there is a technical and very steep section when leaving the Ay valley gorges towards La Croix.
Towards the end of the route, you also have to cross the N86 twice and there is a dangerous section with cars driving along the edge of the N86 to cross the bridge over the Cance.

A magnificent hike, sometimes a little challenging but offering such varied landscapes and panoramic views!
We stopped on the rocks of the Ay riverbed for a picnic... an enchanting spot bathed in sunshine on a beautiful winter's day. I did the hike on 16 January and then again on 15 February 2024... and I loved it just as much the second time! The second time, rain had caused the Ay to rise and we had to hold on to the ropes installed along the rocks. The climb just after the Ay rocks is steep and the path is very narrow. After heavy rain, this section becomes difficult.
A very beautiful route!!!

Route tracked using GPS and map.
We loved this route, which takes you off the beaten track.
We loved the diversity of the scenery, the wild, steep and intimate paths, and the more "calm" passages along the straight lines of the vineyards.
We appreciated the information boards dotted along the start of the route, particularly the discovery of a water channel.
Despite the grey skies, the Mediterranean-style vegetation (pines, junipers, holm oaks, etc.) brightened up and added colour to this winter's day.
Crossing the Ay Gorges was the icing on the cake, with the climb up to the cross, which was steep and rugged but great fun and ultimately neither very long nor very difficult (there are trees to hold on to and wooden logs have been installed as steps).
A big THANK YOU for this route.

Thank you for this beautiful spring hike. The route is magnificent with vegetation coming to life and beautiful rivers that are very low, so there's no problem walking along the bed of the Ay.
There are no particular difficulties along the route, but a GPS device is useful in some cases to clear up any doubts... I recommend you try it, you won't be disappointed.
We did the hike with a beginner and it took us a little longer than advertised, but there were no problems in terms of difficulty.

A superb hike on a beautiful sunny day in February.
A few GPS checks were necessary in some places to navigate the numerous paths through the vineyards.
No worries about walking along the Ay river: no need for guardrails or ropes given the low water level at present.
A good climb to the cross above the Ay river!
Very beautiful winter landscapes.
Thanks to the author.

A magnificent hike between vineyards and hillsides, best done early in the morning in summer. Clear and easy-to-follow instructions. Many thanks to the SARRAS RANDONNEE club for making the River Ay safe. Pure bliss!
