Between the Malval and the Étang Picard via the Bois du Roi

A very pleasant walk, featuring several paths along the river and through the woods, offering a complete change of scenery. As you will be walking along many paths through the woodland, there are few tarmac roads or sections. This walk is easy as there is little elevation gain relative to the distance.

Description of the walk

Start: La Fouillouse stadium car park, opposite the station. Easy parking.

(S/E) Head towards the small river "Le Malval" and follow it upstream.

(1) Pass below the town hall, turn right after the footbridge and cross the main road.
Continue to follow the Malval and walk alongside the allotments to reach the top of this small hill.
Head back down the other side, keeping to the left, to return to the road to Saint-Héand.

(2) At the road, turn immediately right onto the path which runs alongside the Malval again.
Please note that this path consists of two sections separated by a housing estate in between.
When you reach the Route de Saint-Héand (D102) again, turn right and follow the road for about 300 m.

(3) After the bridge and the car park, cross the road and turn left onto the tarmac path towards Monteux (ignore the sign pointing to Monteux in the opposite direction for cars).
Take care on this hairpin bend as it is a one-way, narrow road and cars may be coming down. Once in the hamlet of Monteux, keep straight ahead to leave the tarmac.

(4) After a slight bend to the left, enter the Bois de Monichard, keeping to the path ahead of you. In this first section of the woods, the path curves to the left as it descends, leading to another path further down.

(5) Turn right for a few dozen metres, then immediately turn left to reach the Malval crossing. After the crossing, keep to the path on the right to follow the edge of the woods.

(6) At the junction of the Pagrand paths, head up to the left, keeping to the path ahead of you until you reach a road.

(7) When you reach the road, turn left and follow it for about 800m until you reach a tarmac path.

(8) At the junction, turn left onto the tarmac path. When you reach the bend on the right, walk alongside a pond and continue straight on between the houses, then follow the path downhill.

(9) On your right, you will see a statue. Turn right onto the road for 30 metres, then take the small street on the left and turn left onto Allée de Marnas. Follow the road downhill to reach the roundabout. Take the2nd exit (Allée de la Croix) for 50 m uphill, then take the small grassy path on the right as it curves slightly. Continue along the tarmac section until you reach the cross street.

(10) Turn left into the street (Allée du Pilat) and head down to the Coursière de Beccaud on the left. When you reach the street, turn right to reach the village centre.
You are now on the main street of La Fouillouse (Rue de la Libération). Head down to the left until you reach the traffic lights. Walk past the town hall on your right and cross the small footbridge over the Malval.

(1) Walk past the football stadium on your right to reach the car park at the start opposite (S/E).

Hello
Start at the car park near the stadium, close to the main road.
Follow the stream without crossing the bridge. As you walk along the stream, you’ll find yourself behind the town hall; cross the stream; cross the road and take the path opposite, which goes through the allotments; or go over the top.

A nice walk – I had a bit of trouble finding the starting point; you really do have to set off from the allotments, and I struggled to find them.

A walk that takes about 2 hours – it all depends on your pace
Very well signposted
A good route for those looking for a short trail not far from Saint-Étienne.
First part is nice
Second part: quite a bit of road.
Crossing the Malval stream in the forest depends on whether it has rained recently or not; it had rained heavily so we got our feet a bit wet.
On the way back, you can take the park path
An idea for finding a route with less tarmac...

A nice little walk, though there was a bit too much tarmac on the way back

An interesting variation on this magnificent route through town and countryside involves, at the end of the walk (when walking anti-clockwise), crossing the road that runs through the village to reach the car park by entering the village... there is a magnificent half-timbered house at number 15 on the main street.

Take care with the numerous signposts along the route; you should download the walk and pay attention at junctions.

An easy and very interesting walk without straying far from St Étienne

This route can get a bit muddy in the depths of winter, so make sure you’re wearing suitable footwear
It alternates between tarmac, woodland and very quiet paths; I thought this walk was lovely
However, thank goodness we had the app on our mobile phones; in my opinion, the paper version isn’t enough
There are quite a few signposts along the route; perhaps they corresponded to a number? But we couldn’t work out which one
I think there’s a tarmac section on the road near the sawmill that can be avoided; if you go straight on, we think we saw a dirt track in the distance that joins the route
Worth a look
