Between Lautignac and Savères via the lake

Peaceful countryside, no difficulty, beautiful lake, especially in autumn, with the ochre hues of the surrounding woods.

Description of the walk

Start from the church in Lautignac (war memorial).

(S/E) With your back to the church, head left, then turn immediately right onto the D83 towards Rieumes, passing the town hall on your left. At the fork shortly afterwards, keep right and turn into a dead-end road, Chemin de Mounjeat, passing the school on your left, until you reach No. 1030 at the hamlet of Mounjeat.

(1) Continue straight on down a dirt track until you reach the bottom of the valley.

(2) Ignore the path on the left leading up to Rieumes and walk along the right-hand side of the Bois de Laroujat.

(3) At the T-junction, turn left and take the metal bridge on the left which crosses the Saverette.

(4) At the junction of the dirt tracks, follow the one on the right that runs alongside the lake and keep to the right of the lake until you reach the dam.

(5) Turn right and walk along the embankment. On the other side, take the short uphill path opposite. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the right. At the “Savères” sign, turn right towards the town hall and the church (you can reach the main square, with benches and tables for picnics).

(6) At the town hall, turn right onto Chemin de Ronde and walk alongside the castle. At the junction, turn right, staying on Chemin de Ronde.

(7) Take the first right, Chemin du Lac, and head downhill. Ignore the first path on the right and turn left with the road. Ignore a path starting on the left.

(8) Take the next path on the right, going round a barrier. Reach the lake and walk along its right-hand side. Further on, move away from the lake by veering left, cross a stream and climb up the other side.

(9) At the T-junction, turn left and join a road (D83E). Note the Maquis de Rieumes memorial on the left, after the bridge.

(10) Follow the road to the right and uphill. Stay on this road, passing the hamlets of Livoy, La Bourdette de Devant and Barrère, and you will reach the church at Lautignac (S/E).

Picnic tables and benches on the square in Savères.
Beautiful views of the woods bordering the lake in autumn.
Risk of muddy conditions in bad weather.

It seems that new trails have been marked out.
Fortunately, we met a local hiker who knew the area. For the first time in several years, we got lost because of the imprecise route...
It's still a lovely little hike in autumn, despite some very muddy sections!

I confirm that this hike should only be done in dry weather. A minimum of 10 days without rain.
The return journey (right bank of the lake and river) is on a clay path.
The only difficulty is the final climb up the departmental road. The slope is gentle but long. As a family, we did it in 2½ hours.

I haven't done it yet for health reasons, but I plan to do it as soon as I'm feeling better

A circular route best tackled in very dry weather!!!! Otherwise, it’s just mud, mud and more mud!! There are quite a few sections where 4x4s, quads and bikes have ruined the track. And the return journey by road… not great.

A lovely walk in the countryside, but be careful: it’s best to go when the weather is very dry, as there are two sections of muddy path that have been badly damaged by unidentified motorised vehicles… We’ll definitely be doing it again!

Thank you for your review of this hike. After the rain over the last few days, some sections near the lake are likely to be very muddy. The joys of winter hiking. Best regards.

A lovely walk along paths, through woods and along country lanes. Beautiful scenery with the Pyrenees in the background.
The village of Savères is well worth a visit. A few patches of slush.
