Park at Place de la Mairie (plenty of parking spaces).
Yellow markings
(S/E) Head up Rue de la République to the left to reach the village square. Turn slightly right onto Rue Montante, which becomes Chemin des Groubelles. At the first junction, stay on Chemin des Groubelles and continue uphill to the D100.
Turn left onto the road and immediately right onto the track to find the La Tête du Soldat signpost.
(1) Continue along this track (MV100) which begins to climb. Pass the Le Soldat junction and, 100m further on, reach the La Pleithe marker.
(2) Turn left towards Les Esperacons. At a junction, ignore the path, continue straight ahead and turn right onto a track (junction not shown on the map) which leads to a flat area at another junction (junction not shown on the map).
Leave the path on the right and continue straight on for 10m to reach another Fork in the road. Turn left to reach the Les Esperacons marker.
(3) Turn right towards the Vallon des Esperacons on the path, which offers fine views. The descent, easy at first, becomes steeper and slippery as you reach the Vallon des Esperacons signpost (off-centre on the map).
Red and white markings
Turn left towards Valette and begin the descent down the valley. After about 700m, the path veers right and crosses the dry stream bed to reach the Valette signpost very close to the D100a.
(4) Head right towards Font de l'Oule on a path that runs alongside the D100a until you reach a small car park and the Font de l'Oule marker.
(5) Turn right towards La Pouraque, following the path uphill. After about 350m, you’ll reach a large crossroads. Ignore the two paths leading uphill to the right and head left towards a path that goes round the rocky outcrop.
Blue markings
During the climb, look out for a beautiful drystone shelter on your right. When you reach a flat area, ignore a small path climbing up to the right (not marked on the map) and continue along the track. Begin the descent; a little further on, ignore another path (not marked on the map) and head towards the ruins of the Château des Évêques.
(6) Follow the path to the left of the building to descend steeply towards the village. Please note that some sections are a little tricky (steps carved into the rock). The path continues, winding between the houses to reach Avenue Pétrarque.
Red and white markings
(7) Turn immediately right and take the Arquà Petrarca path, which leads to the landscaped banks of the Sorgue.
In season, you can visit the François Pétrarque Museum and Library (closed from 1 November to 19 March). Return to the avenue and turn right to cross the Sorgue.
Yellow markings
Continue right onto the Chemin de la Fontaine, a lovely landscaped walkway leading to the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse chasm.
(8) Turn back along the same path and turn left to cross the Sorgue again.
Red and white markings
At the start of the bend, just opposite where the path from the château ends, turn right under the arcades of Avenue Pétrarque to avoid walking on the road. As you emerge from the arcades, continue along the side of the road, pass a large car park and leave the Montée du Guérisseur on your left.
Further on, leave the Route Touristique de Gordes on your left and continue for about 20m. Cross the road to the Les Bastides Ouest signpost.
Red and yellow markings
(9) Leave the road and turn left towards Bondelon. The path veers to the right above the houses.
At the start of a concrete section, leave the path on your left, then reach a fork in the road on a clearing. Turn left onto a wider path which continues uphill to a flat area near some ruins.
Continue straight on, ignoring the paths branching off to the left, until you reach a crossroads. Turn right and you will come to the Bondelon signpost.
(10) Follow the tarmac road to the left towards La Bastide Rouge. Pass between two properties and continue until you reach the La Bastide Rouge signpost at the end.
Red and Yellow + Orangemarkings
Leave the road and continue straight ahead along the path. Be careful here as the markings are confusing due to a Yellow Cross causing some confusion. Continue along this path through the forest, pass a beautiful property and, about 100m further on, look out for a rogation cross on the left just before reaching the road (D100a).
(11) Turn right to find the Basse Carpiane marker 10m further on. Leave the road on your right and take the path climbing up to the left towards Lagnes. Pass a beautiful house, follow a dry stone wall, pass between houses and leave the road on your left.
Continue for about 100m and take a short detour to the right along a path marked with a cross to see a very beautiful drystone shelter. Return to the main path and turn right to descend onto the road (D186). Follow the road to the right for 100m to arrive in front of No. 427.
(12) Pass the cemetery path on your right and the road leading to Lagnes on your left, and follow the path opposite which goes round the house to the right. Continue along the path, which offers lovely views of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and leads to Lagnes Castle.
Turn right and then immediately left to pass under an archway; follow Rue Venteuse. At the next junction, turn left onto the same street until you reach No. 57 (house with miniature drystone shelters).
Turn right, then after a short descent, turn left into a narrow lane and follow the steps to the right. Once on Rue des Remparts, turn left to rejoin Rue de la République. Follow it to the right to return to the car park (S/E).
