Between Durèze and Soulège

Thanks to this walk starting from Gensac, an ancient stronghold perched on the natural bend formed by the rocky outcrop, you can look out over the valleys of the Durèze, the Soulège and the Dordogne.

Description of the walk

Start the walk from the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville.

(S/E) Opposite the town hall, take Rue Graulhet on the left. At the junction, follow the road opposite, which curves slightly to the left and goes downhill, and continue along the path through the woods. When you reach the limestone path, continue straight ahead to join the small tarmac road.

(1) At the 90° bend, take the grassy path on the left and enter the woods. Follow this path until you come back up onto the D16. Walk along the verge of this road to the village of Pessac-sur-Dordogne.

(2) At the Protestant church, turn left onto Rue du Port and walk down to the quays. Follow the banks of the Dordogne north-eastwards, passing under the bridge and past the Château de Vidasse.

(3) Continue along this small road, which leads onto a dirt track in front of the pumping station. Carry on until you reach the D130.

(4) Turn right (take care), pass the cemetery, then, at the second junction, turn left onto the small road towards the hamlet of Guillemat.

(5) Then continue along the dirt track which crosses a stream. Follow the dirt track to the right and pass between the houses: it is marked as Labarthe on the IGN map, but the hamlet is also known as Le Méjean. The track leads to the hamlet of Maupile. Continue straight on until you reach the 90° bend in the road.

(6) Turn left into the vineyard lane. At the tarmac road, turn right then left onto the path that climbs after the first vineyard plot. Once on the plateau, take the path on your right, follow the vineyards then the woods to reach a tarmac road.

(7) Turn immediately left and head downhill to the junction at Moustelat.

(8) Turn right and follow the road. At the stop sign, take the road on your left for a few dozen metres.

(9) Turn off onto the path on the right and head up into the woods. Follow the embankment on the left to get back onto the road, where you turn left towards the hamlet of Claribès.

(10) Turn right and follow this small road straight on until you reach a junction after Château de Carbonneau.

(11) Continue straight ahead, pass a cross and leave the hamlet of Jaure on your right. Carry on to the next junction with the Route du Vivey.

(12) Take the street on the right, cross the D18 with care and take the street opposite (Rue Neuve). Cross the Route de Pessac (D16) again with care and continue along the street opposite, the Cours des Fossés, until you reach the junction with Rue de l’Église.

(13) Turn right onto this street and follow it. Keep to the right and you will pass in front of the church. Then follow Rue du Château to reach Place de l’Hôtel de Ville (S/E).

A lovely walk, with wide, rolling and varied landscapes. The village of GENSAC is well worth a visit – the old village

A brilliant walk, very well signposted, even though there’s quite a bit of road, but not too much traffic; beautiful scenery and a very hilly route. The pretty village of Gensac, and a lovely spot overlooking the valley for a picnic

Very well marked trail.
However, there is far too much tarmac, especially in the second half.
There is only a short section along the river at the start, where the canoes depart, and no view of the rivers afterwards.

A superb ride featuring a mix of quiet country lanes, vineyards and woodland.
A hilly route with no particular difficulties.
The lovely village of Gensac.
I highly recommend this route, which is very well signposted.
