In the Loubatière Forest

In hot weather, here’s a short, shaded walk in the Loubatière State Forest along paths not necessarily marked on the IGN map but very pleasant to walk along with little elevation gain. The route shares a section with the Lacombe PR°°®°° trail

Description of the walk

(S/E) Park at Place des Jeux in Cals (hamlet of Lacombe).

(S/E) Head towards the Route de la Loubatière. At the Place de l’Aubépine (two-hundred-year-old tree), turn left downhill, passing a village fountain. At the bottom of Rue des Lavandières, rejoin the Route de Laprade (D 253) to cross through Cals Bas.

(1) After a traffic island, turn left onto the Chemin des Mineurs, a poorly marked track that bypasses a large circular bend in the main road via the Travers de la Fonde. Back on the road, follow it to the left and pass the Maison Forestière de la Loubatière, ignoring a signpost on a track to the right. Look out for a disused road on the left and take it.

(2) On this slip road, known as Allée du Roi de Rome, take the path on the left and head up into the Loubatière National Forest. You will reach a junction at a place called Lacal.

(3) Turn right onto the Chemin de l'Eau, a path created for a water pipeline. This section is marked with a yellow line (PR® de Lacombe) and blue markings. After crossing two streams, tributaries of the Linon, head back up to the D 253.

(4) Cross the road at a bend and take the path opposite into the woods. The path runs alongside the road for a while before veering away to climb up to the Col du Fangas Haut. Head left to the crossroads, the meeting point for the Lacombe ACCA hunters.

(5) Walk a few metres to the right along the road before spotting thePR® markings on the left, which lead down towards the Fraissègne valley. You’ll come out onto a track.

(6) Leave thePR® trail, which heads towards the shore of Lac de la Galaube, by turning sharply left. At Prat d'al Reï, ignore the path opposite leading down to the lake. Stay on the track that crosses the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Dental. After two wide hairpin bends, join the Piste du Fangas.

(7) Take it to the right and cross the Rec des Agnels plateau before passing the water tower and a mobile phone relay station.

(8) Take the faint path on the left which crosses a copse and then a field protected by a barrier. After passing an underground water reservoir, you’ll reach the dead-end of the Ruelle du Réservoir, which leads back to the Place des Jeux de Cals (hamlet of Lacombe) (S/E).

Please note the wild boar hunting season: Wednesday–Saturday and Sunday from 15 August to the end of January. Contact the ACCA.

Worth a visit

The left bank of Lac de la Galaube can only be accessed on foot as far as the ford on the Alzeau. (Vehicles prohibited)
Below Lacombe (1 km away via a footpath): the Prise d’Alzeau, where the water supply for the Canal du Midi begins. A beautiful, shaded route following the Rigole de la Montagne (by mountain bike or on foot).

After talking to a local resident, we advise against using the Place des Jeux in Cals, as it is used by residents who live nearby.
If you are coming from Lacombe, we recommend parking on the right at the entrance to the hamlet, next to a hundred-year-old tree. This car park is much larger than the Place des Jeux and has shaded parking spaces.

A lovely walk to get back into shape. Suitable for families. Mainly shaded by huge trees, with cool ferns, even in summer. It is essential to use GPS, as some paths, although visible and clearly marked on the ground, are not shown on IGN maps. Gently sloping, no difficulty.

Start/finish: N 43.397909° / E 2.240660°
Leave the car park and join the Route de la Loubatière, turning right and leaving Lacombe behind you.
Thank you for this route, which is not easy to find even with an IGN map.

PS: Check if you plan to do this route at the end of July, as rallies are organised in the area. We had to turn back several times with our car blocked by roads closed to traffic on both the outward and return journeys, forcing us to make serious detours.

Good evening, everyone. A lovely, peaceful walk through the woods. We extended the route at point 6 by taking the path on the right, so we could walk along the left bank of Lake Galaube all the way to the dam. See you soon, petitbob.

A lovely walk in the shade; the ladies were delighted with the gentle gradient.
Not very busy; highly recommended in this heat.

A lovely, almost entirely shaded walk through the woods at an altitude of 800 metres. Perfect for hot weather.
On your way back, stop off at Saissac for a drink and to enjoy the view.
