Elsassblick Mutzig Rock and return from Walscheid

A hike with beautiful views. The hike starts on the border ridge between Moselle and Bas-Rhin in the commune of Walscheid. The route takes you along open paths and through wooded areas with views of the Alsace plain, then to the highest point of the route, the Rocher de Mutzig, which offers views of the Vosges mountains to the east, south and west, as well as the Lorraine plateau to the far west.

Description of the walk

Access to the starting point is by car via the Zorn forest road (Schaeferhof-Dabo), then take the Beimbach forest road. When you reach Hohwalschplatz, turn left. Follow the forest road to the Petersmuehl Forest House. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and follow the Zorn Jaune until you reach the junction with the Route des Russes at a place called Elsassblick. Another access route is possible from Walscheid at the pond via the forest road that runs alongside the Bièvre to Hohwalshplatz. The route is the same from this point onwards.

(S/E) Leave the car park and take the Russes forest road, following it for about 500 metres.

(1) Turn left and follow the blue horse markers. You will walk through coniferous forest on a level path, which joins a forest road just before the Grossmann Forest House.

(2) Continue along the forest road for a few metres, then turn left onto the path marked with a blue cross towards Altmatt. The path climbs 90 metres under the canopy of the forest.

(3) At Altmatt, you will reach a forest road called Kohlweg. Turn right, heading south, following the red rectangle with a white stripe (a variant ofthe GR®5). When the path begins to curve to the left, you will come to a fork. Take the right fork for a few dozen metres to reach the Col de Narion and the Baraque au Juifs.

(4) At the Baraque aux Juifs, turn left onto theGR®5, marked with a red rectangle, towards the Rocher de Mutzig. The path climbs 80 metres and becomes rockier.

(5) At Rocher de Mutzig, enjoy the views of the Alsace plain, Struhthof, Champ du Feu, Climont, Hautes Vosges, Donon and the Lorraine plateau.
Retrace your steps and return to the Col de Narion.

(4) Continue along the path you took on the way there until you reach Altmatt.

(3) Continue right towards the north-east on the forest road marked with a red rectangle crossed with white. After a hairpin bend to the right, the path heads south-south-west. Continue for about 300 metres.

(6) Leave the forest road and take the track on the left (same markings). Follow this wide path and the red and white rectangular markings. It remains almost level for about 2 km, then reaches a junction with a path on the left.

(7) Leave the wide path on the left and climb steeply for 150 m, following the same markings. You will come out at the Elsassblick car park. This last section can be slippery in wet weather (S/E).

Notes

(2) A spring below the Grossmann forest house. (Not evaluated during our visit)

The Hasel spring can be reached from Altmatt by following the "Blue Disc and Cross" 250 m downhill. It can also be reached from the crossroads (6) uphill by following the Blue Disc and Cross. It flows strongly in all seasons.

(2) There is a shelter in the basement of the Grossmann forest house with tables and benches. There is a wood-burning stove. The room is open to the public. It is located on the left side of the forest road.

(4) The shelter at the Jewish hut is enclosed on three sides and has benches and a counter.

The necessary equipment is basic: walking shoes, rucksack with food and drink, rainwear.

The only difficulty on the route is the ascent and descent of the Rocher de Mutzig on a stony path.

Worth a visit

Panoramic views as soon as you cross the border ridge between the two departments. Views of the Alsace plain and the Bruche valley

(5) The Rocher de Mutzig with its breathtaking panorama of the Bruche Valley and its villages, the Champ du Feu, the Struhthof concentration camp (you can see the spire of the memorial), the Climont (source of the Bruche), the Hautes-Vosges (Grand Ballon, Markstein, Hohneck...), the two Donons, the Lorraine Plateau and, to the north, the Northern Vosges.

A pleasant hike, although it's a shame there are so many people at the Mutzig rock, but it's worth a look. We pushed on to the stone gate, returning via the charcoal burners' path, then came back to the Jews' hut.

A pleasant hike, well signposted, with some beautiful views.
An unexpected difficulty at the end: a very steep climb at the very end of the route to reach the car park! Save your energy 🤗

We set off from the Elsassblick car park, coming from Walscheid, and travelled about 18 km along a relatively narrow forest road with several signs indicating that traffic was prohibited 🤔. The road was blocked 5/6 km from the car park due to resurfacing work, but we decided to ignore it.The route was changed twice to create a quiet zone... at the start and on the way back to Altmatt... with a nice final descent that was quite slippery in wet weather to get back to the car park...We went as far as the Pierre gate, thinking we would return via the yellow circle trail, which is marked on the IGN map and splits in two. We couldn't find the one that should have taken us back under the Mutzig rock. We had to descend to the lowest point to climb back up to the Cabane des Juifs... Otherwise, it was a beautiful, uncrowded route for a Sunday.

A lovely family outing. A different and very accessible approach to the Mutzig rock. Thank you for this suggestion.

I discovered the hike yesterday on the website and tried it out straight away, without any reviews, to get an idea for myself.
Well, thank you! Very nice, not difficult, varied and with lovely views.
And the icing on the cake, between points 6 and 7, mini springs seep from the rock face from time to time.
Took 3 hours and 17 minutes, plus a half-hour break at point 5.
No one else on 80% of the route, except of course at the top of Rocher de Mutzig, but nothing catastrophic, especially for a Sunday and such beautiful weather.
I recommend it.
