Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Venta du Col d'Ispeguy.

(S/E) Set off to the left of the venta, heading south into the forest, on the steeply sloping path. At the edge of the forest, follow the winding path that undulates along the rocky ridge and leads to a grassy plateau. Continue south on this plateau and re-enter a beech forest. Follow the well-marked path south, lined with old pidgeon hunting huts, before climbing up a stony path. Exit the forest and reach a rocky pass.

(1) Turn south and follow the border ridge to reach the Nekaitzeko Lepoa Pass and border marker 98.

(2) Continue along the southern path on the border, passing boundary markers 99 and 100. At boundary marker 101, turn right towards the west to reach boundary marker 102 at the Col d'Elhorrieta.

(3) Descend to the left onto the track. Cross a stream and shortly afterwards you will reach a trail junction.

(4) Take the left path up a grassy slope. Turn almost 180° to the right to stay almost on the hillside for a few hundred metres. You will reach the foot of a rocky ridge.

(5) Climb up to the left, turning almost 180°, and follow this small rocky ridge. Cross it at its northern end through a small corridor. Continue along the grassy plateau and then through a rocky corridor. Then turn right to reach the summit of Elhorriko Kaskoa.

(6) Descend north-east to the pass below. Be careful here, between Elhorriko Kaskoa and Urrizpilota, the ridge is very steep. Pass to the west and proceed with caution. Continue climbing north-east towards a rocky peak, going around it to the west. You will then reach a tarmac track at the Urrizpilotako Lepoa pass. Leave it immediately on the left and climb to the summit of Urrizpilota.

(7) Leave the tarmac road on the right and follow the wide path that enters a beech forest. Follow this path to the Nekaitzeko Lepoa Pass, which you passed on the way up.

(2) Take the path on the right, heading east, and descend into the forest. Stay on this path, which is steep in places, to reach the car park at the Venta du Col d'Ispeguy (S/E).

Please note that between Elhorriko Kaskoa and Urrizpilota, the ridge is very steep. Pass to the west and proceed with caution.
The return route from point (2) avoids the GR® trail to Ispegi, which is very rough with dangerous sections.
This route should be undertaken in good weather to avoid hazards and make the most of the landscape.

The scenery along this route is magnificent.
Unfortunately, why does the route take us via points 4 and 5? I would recommend going directly from point 3 to point 6, facing the slope; a path, which gradually disappears, allows you to do this.
The rest of the hike is pleasant and offers beautiful views of the region.

A beautiful hike without any major difficulties, best done in dry weather (some sections may be tricky at the end of the route if the ground is slippery). We followed the route in the same direction.
The start of the trail in the forest is not easy to find: as is often the case in the Basque Country, there are few or no signs for hiking trails. Fortunately, the description helped us a lot (landmarks such as border markers and pidgeon hunting huts).
Beautiful views of the French and Spanish Basque Country. Sheep and pottoks await you.
As with any hike, make sure you bring enough water.

The first part of the route to Col d'Elhorrieta is very well marked. But after that, it's a nightmare. No more red and white markers. No more signposts. We went back down the same way instead of doing a circular route.

Interesting provided it is combined with the ascent of "L'Autza from the Col d'Ispeguy and return via the Olhateko Kaskoa ridge".

We look for each other a little between 4 and 6, especially when we're alone and unable to connect.
