Practical information

Start : The John of Gaunt, Hungerford (RG17 0EH) Grid ref. SU 339688

Driving to start : About nine miles from Newbury. Take the A4 to Hungerford and turn left at the mini-roundabout by The Bear Hotel. The John of Gaunt is about 200yds on the left.

Refreshments : The John of Gaunt, Hungerford, a busy small-town pub that serves decent beer and bar snacks. It is in common ownership with the Five Bells, Wickham, and serves beers from the microbrewery there.

Alternative : Note that this walk can be done from The Downgate Hungerford Common by walking across the common, under the railway, and turning left along the canal towpath. On the return, a footpath immediately before the JoG takes you back to the canal towpath. The additional distance is about a mile.
