From the old village of Cairanne to Serre de la Garde

This circular trail presents no particular difficulties and allows you to explore the old village of Cairanne. The hilltop village is a natural viewpoint over the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux to the east and the Aygues and Rhône valleys to the west. Surrounded by the renowned Côtes du Rhône vineyards, it is also famous for its AOC "Cairanne" wine.
From vineyards to woodland, from footpaths to forest tracks, this hike takes you to the Croix du Serre de la Garde, where a 360° panorama awaits you.

Description of the walk

Parking is available on the way up to the old village, in Allée des Travers (a few spaces).

(S/E) At the end of Allée des Travers, turn left onto Chemin de Saint-Geniès, then go up, keeping to the right at the fork. Pass in front of the Chapelle des Excès, then through gate 1 of the Barbacane, and follow the access ramp to gate 2 of the Barbacane.

(1) Leave Gate 2 of the Barbican on your right and continue towards the area on the ramparts (superb view of the Comtat Venaissin plain). At the end, take the stairs leading to Saint-André Church.

(2) Turn right onto Rue de l'Église, then descend to the left via Porte d'Autanne. You will arrive at a small square overlooking the Saint-Roch Chapel (1726), whose bell tower is located in the surrounding wall above.

(3) Go down to the left on a grassy path marked "Sentier Bouteille" and "Sentier Magnum". Follow it to the crossroads on the tarmac road (small oratory at the bottom). Turn right.

(4) First turn right then left and go up Route de Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde (watch out for vehicles, as the roadside is not suitable for pedestrians). At a fork, keep left. Ignore a small lane on the left, then turn left with the main road.

(5) At the next intersection, turn right onto Chemin de la Montagne. When the small tarmac road becomes a stony path, continue straight ahead (red and whiteGR® markings), passing a small house. Pass a path on the left marked with a cross, then keep to the right to enter the woods on a marked trail (yellowPR® and red and whiteGR® markings).

(6) At the crossroads, descend to the right until you reach the small tarmac road (Chemin de l'Amassat). Follow it to the left (yellowPR® and red and whiteGR® markings).

(7) At the fork, leave the tarmac road and take the path on the right up to a crossroads. Go to the "La Montagne" hiking signpost.

(8) Leave theGR® and continue straight ahead, after a barrier, on aPR® path (yellow markings). At the fork, keep to the right. You will come to a forest track; follow it to the right. Ignore a path on the left marked in yellow. Go through another barrier and continue straight ahead.

(9) At the crossroads (Col de Viarès car park), cross the tarmac road and continue straight ahead on the RC10 track. Ignore a path on the left, stay on this track which turns left and leads to a crossroads in a right-hand bend.

(10) Leave the track and take a path opposite, through the undergrowth. Stay on the main path (marked in yellow). At the next T-junction, join theGR® de pays (marked in red and yellow) and follow it to the left. Ignore a path that descends steeply to the right and continue until you leave the woods and walk alongside a vineyard. The landscape opens up, offering beautiful views of La Lance and the Baronnies Provençales, Tulette and the Cellier des Dauphins. Walk along the vineyard on your left and descend the first path on the right, following the yellow and red markings. Descend this increasingly rugged path until you reach the tarmac road. Cross it.

(11) Climb up the botanical trail opposite. Reach the summit of Serre de la Garde (superb panorama, orientation tables, picnic tables).

(12) Turn around to return to the previous crossroads.

(11) Then continue along the path to the right, below the road. Stay on this main path (yellow and red markings), ignoring a path branching off to the left.

(13) After a right-hand bend, climb up to the left through the undergrowth (yellow and red markings). At the "Travers des Vergers 301 m" signpost, continue right on a wide path (yellow and red markings). Stay on this path until you reach the RC10 forest track.

(14) At the "La Montagne Ouest 238 m" signpost, turn right (yellow and red markings). Stay on the track until you reach the Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde road.

(15) At the "Ventabren 258 m" signpost, cross the tarmac road, turn left and immediately descend to the right below the road to follow the "Sentier Bouteille" trail. This trail enters the undergrowth.

(16) When you come out of the woods, continue along the Sentier Bouteille trail, passing between the vineyards and enjoying superb views of Mont Ventoux, the Crête de Saint-Amand and the Dentelles de Montmirail. Continue straight ahead on the same path to admire the descent to Cairanne. Once you reach the tarmac road, turn left down Chemin Ferme Delauze (Sentier Bouteille). You will arrive in front of the small oratory you passed on the way there.

(4) Go up to the right on the Sentier Bouteille and Magnum.

(3) When you reach the foot of the ramparts, turn left onto Calade du Sergent. You will see the keep on your right. Keep to the right and follow another paved slanting street with a staircase leading to Gate 2 of the Barbican.

(1) Go through the fortified gate, turn left and go down the ramp you took on the way up. Pass the Chapelle des Excès and return to the car park where you started (S/E).

A pleasant walk, but one to be avoided in very hot weather, with lots of different coloured markings, so keep your eyes peeled.

Winter hiking, lots of trails and tarmac. I combined the Magnum trail and Serré de la Garde.
