From Sas de Pordoi to the Boe Refuge, a barren, rocky landscape

You’re on ‘the terrace of the Dolomites’. A stunning, surprising setting – I’ll let you discover it for yourself!
An easy walk, popular with families. In good weather, there’s a 360° view. There’s a welcoming mountain hut/restaurant at either end of the walk. If you’re lucky, you might see people in wingsuits jumping and flying off the cliff at Sas de Pordoi

Description of the walk

Start from Sas de Pordoi. See details in the practical information section. Signposts at junctions.

(S/E) Follow the path towards the Forcella Pordoi Hut, the Boe Hut and Piz Boe. The path is poorly marked, running across a wide plateau, but don’t worry. Then take the steps down to Forcella Pordoi.

(1) Follow the path towards Piz Boe and the Boe Mountain Hut.

(2) Signpost. Follow the path on the left, which climbs gently. Take a section with a handrail and follow the red-and-white markings on the ground indicating the path.

(3) Arrival at the Boe Refuge. You can continue a little further to admire the view over the other side of the mountain.
Return via the same route you took on the way up to get back to the Sas de Pordoi (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : mi 0 - alt. 9,580 ft - Top of the cable car departing from Passo Pordoi
  2. 1 : mi 0.31 - alt. 9,327 ft - Forcella Pordoi mountain hut
  3. 2 : mi 0.64 - alt. 9,301 ft - Junction: 2 paths leading to the Boe Refuge or Piz Boe
  4. 3 : mi 1.71 - alt. 9,409 ft - Boe Mountain Hut
  5. S/E : mi 3.58 - alt. 9,580 ft - Top of the cable car departing from Passo Pordoi

Notes

From Arraba, a Dolomiti bus will take you to Passo Pordoi – the cable car departure point – for €3. Enquiries at the Tourist Office. A bus runs every hour on weekdays, less frequently on Sundays.
You can also get there from Canazei.
Paid car park at Passo Pordoi if you’re travelling by car.
From the car park, take the cable car up to Sas de Pordoi. €27 return
Another, much more challenging option: walk the (steep) route uphill (and/or downhill) to Forcella Pordoi from the bottom of the cable car – a 600-metre climb to reach (1). Go and enjoy the view from Sas de Pordoi

Worth a visit

A section with a handrail.
At the top of the cable car, the Maria mountain refuge is more like a mountain restaurant: spacious, with a panoramic terrace and orientation tables.
An easy hike. Return via the same route: the climb from (1) at the start may leave you breathless – you’re at altitude, so take it slowly!
The Piz Boe summit (3,152 m) is nearby. The start of the walk is the same. It can also be reached from the Piz Boe Refuge.
At the start (or finish), take the time to head up to the terrace (with orientation tables) or down to the north side to enjoy the view. It is there, down below, that men and women in swingsuits sometimes leap into the void.

Stunning landscapes and views! It’s like being on another planet.
A superb Piz Boë variant (anti-clockwise) to head back down to the end of the original walk.
Be careful on the climb to the summit – there are some vertiginous sections, so make sure you wear sturdy footwear … (ladder section). Very busy (second week of August)

Magnificent views from the terraces (we were lucky enough to see some wingsuit jumps), a very rocky hike as described. I recommend going via the summit of Piz Boé, even if it is very crowded (where isn't it crowded in the Dolomites?), as the view is magnificent, and certainly even better in good weather: from the Marmolada massif to the Cortina valley, the Averau, the Cinque Torri, etc.
The loop via the summit should be done anti-clockwise, as the north side is not very pleasant to climb in the scree, with a few handholds on the south side, but nothing too complicated for an experienced hiker.
