Description of the walk

Reach the disembarkation point at the Port du Palais.

(S/E) With your back to the disembarkation point, head towards the coach station, and after the roundabout, go straight ahead and follow the harbour (Quai Jacques le Blanc). Reach the footbridge spanning the harbour.

(1) Take it to the right, enter the small car park on the right, then head up to the right towards the citadel. Walk past the museum and the citadel. Then continue along theGR®340, marked in white and red, following the seafront. Walk past a youth hostel, continue along the cliff edge until you reach Kastoul Beach. Then turn left to reach a crossroad (Route de Talifer).

(3) Turn right onto this road and you’ll reach a path junction just after the last house on the right-hand side of the road.

(4) Turn right here and head for Port Saint-Julien. Follow the cliffs to the left to reach the headland and Fort de Taillefer.

(5) Continue along the cliffs on theGR®340until you reach a path junction. Leave theGR® here and turn left onto this path to reach a car park; then turn right back to the junction you passed earlier, where you’ll rejoin the GR®.

(4) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there.

(3) Leave theGR® and continue straight ahead (Route de Talifer) until you reach a four-way junction.

(6) Keep left (Route de Talifer), walk through the Rozerier neighbourhood and reach a side street with a Stop sign.

(7) Turn left, then keep right at the three-way junction just after. You’ll reach the large triangular junction (‘Espace Charles de Gaulle’).

(8) Cross at the pedestrian crossing, then turn left and walk to the end of a car park. Take the small road downhill, then turn right to reach the footbridge you used on the way there.

(1) Cross it again, then follow the route back in the opposite direction to return to the Port du Palais disembarkation point (S/E).

We’ve just walked four sections of the Belle-Île coastal path (though we didn’t complete the whole circuit) in windy, sunny weather. It’s all absolutely stunning, and the south is more rugged and wild than the north.
As it was the start of the school holidays, we were able to catch buses to all our hike starting points and back, except for one time when we had to hitch a lift!
The start from Le Palais via the fort is nice; there are quite a few people there at the start, of course. It’s the least rugged part of our walks… We went past Pointe de Taillefer on our way to Port Jean. We returned more or less along the tarmac road, which wasn’t much fun – we’d missed the bus.
