From Hohwald to the source of the Andlau, the Andlau Waterfall and the Lindenhof

A lovely walk starting from Hohwald, heading towards the Source de l'Andlau via the Champ du Feu. Then a return route via the beautiful Cascade de l'Andlau and the Lindenhof, where a farmhouse inn offers refreshments. This walk is refreshing in summer; during the heat of the day, you will mostly walk in the shade and be accompanied at times by the murmur of the small stream flowing below.

Description of the walk

The route starts on Rue Sainte-Odile in Hohwald, where there is free parking.

(S/E) Walk down the street and turn right onto Rue Principale.

(1) Turn left and take the small, steep street (Rue de la Mairie). Continue to the next junction.

(2) Take the road on the left before the school and follow the Blue Cross signposting; this leads to the Col du Kreutzweg.

(3) Take the small road on the right which runs alongside the former Witterthalhof farmhouse inn for about 250 m, until you reach a large half-timbered villa.

(4) Opposite the villa, leave the small road and take a footpath (still following the Blue Cross) to the next junction.

(5) At the junction, take the path straight ahead.

(6) (At the junction, you can reach the Andlau Waterfall more quickly by following the “Red Cross” path which branches off to the right.) Otherwise, stay on the Blue Cross path which climbs towards the Kreuzweg Pass.

(7) At the Col du Kreuzweg, take the opportunity to pause and enjoy the scenery and the Villa Mathis. Head towards the D425, taking care when crossing it. Walk alongside the car park, still following the Blue Cross.

(8) Head up the small road past the car park and continue along this forest track (do not take the Chevalet and Yellow Disc trail which climbs to the left). From here, follow the Blue Saltire trail to Champ du Feu. Switch from the road to the forest track after a hairpin bend.

(9) As you come out of the hairpin bend, take the path climbing up to the left, which leads back to the road.

(10) Back on the small forest track, turn left and follow it for just over 300 m.

(11) Pass the “Blue Saltire” path on your right, which climbs towards La Serva and Le Champ du Feu. Continue straight ahead on the road to La Chaume des Veaux.

(12) Then return to the junction.

(1) Take the Blue Saltire path which climbs to the left towards Champ du Feu and La Serva. Continue straight on until you reach the forest road.

(13) (You can, by taking the path on the right – Blue Triangle then Red Rectangle – reach the Source de l'Andlau directly without going via the Champ du Feu.)
Otherwise, continue straight ahead on the Blue Saltire path.

(14) Once you reach the Champ du Feu moorland, take the path that descends immediately to the right and follow the Red Rectangle. A sign points to the Source de l'Andlau.

(15) You will cross several paths. Make sure you stay on the Red Rectangle route by continuing straight on towards the spring.

(16) Leaving the Source de l'Andlau, head down the path following the Red Rectangle. (Work is currently underway: July 2025, and there are many tree trunks at the start.) Cross a forest track twice.

(17) Cross the small forest road. Take the path on the right at the crossroads. Then cross the small Métairie-Rohrbach forest road. Head down towards the Andlau Waterfall, keeping to the left and then the right.

(18) Please be careful on the descent to the Andlau Waterfall, especially with children. From the waterfall, head down towards the Lindenhof (Neumelkerei) following the Red Disc. At the car park, take the road on the right then quickly the one on the left.

(19) The Lindenhof farmhouse inn is a great place to stop for a bite to eat. Leaving the Lindenhof, take the D425 on the left and follow it for just over 500 m. Watch out for traffic.

(20) At the next fork, COTE 623, then head down the road on the right until you reach the junction from the outward journey.

(2) Continue straight ahead and return to the start by following the route in reverse (S/E).
