Description of the walk

Park in the lower car park of the Château-Vallon National Dance Centre (CND) in Olliuoules.

(S/E) Take the track closed off by a barrier at the far end of the car park. Continue due west to reach the crossroads where the Détras cistern is located.

(1) Turn left and continue uphill until you reach a junction of tracks at a hairpin bend.
Enjoy the beautiful view here and the information boards about the Bay of Toulon.

(2) Stay on the right-hand track and continue uphill to reach an Oppidum. Note: here, do not be concerned by the ‘Private Property’ signs on a tree to the right. Follow this track to a rather neglected property. The track turns left and becomes very rough.

(3) Take the small path on the right with two old signs reading ‘Oppidum’ and ‘Private Property’: access permitted. Follow this path, which crosses a scree slope, to reach an enclosure containing the ruins of a Celto-Ligurian oppidum.
Continue along the path, which isn’t shown on the map but is clearly visible. Follow the ridge, taking the opportunity to veer slightly left to enjoy the view of the sea and the Gorges d’Ollioules.

Turn right and, after a short scree slope, descend steeply. Follow the path, which is now clearly visible through the forest. You’ll come out onto theGR®, take it to the right and soon reach a major junction called Barre de Taillan Est.

(4) Follow the blue markings, takingthe second path on the right. Pass the telegraph post to reach the ridge at a sign marking the boundary between the municipalities of Evenos, Ollioules and Le Revest. Descend through a scree slope, before climbing steeply again to pass another municipal boundary sign. Go round it on the left to reach a T-junction.

(5) Turn right, still following the blue markings. Cross some rock piles then find a wider track near a high-voltage power line. Continue straight ahead on the track. Pass some ruins and an open area with a view of the harbour, then reach a straight trench in the forest. Head down to the left. Leave the marked trail and follow the trench downhill. At the lowest point, you’ll reach a faint path.

(6) Take it to the left; please note that this path is not marked on the IGN map, but it is clearly visible. Then walk through the Vallon de Glaizes. Atthe first junction, turn right. Leave the forest and, at asecond junction, follow the blue markings again. Continue until you reach athird junction.

(7) Leave the blue markings here and follow the yellow markings to the left. First along a ledge, then, after a hairpin bend to the left downhill, you’ll reach the junction you passed on the way out: the Barre de Taillan Est junction.

(4) Take thesecond path on the left, still following the yellow markings, to reach the Détras cistern, a junction you also passed on the way out.

(1) Take the route you followed on the way there to easily find the car park at the Centre National de la Danse in Château-Vallon (S/E).

The joy of hiking, the joy of venturing off the beaten track and enjoying the sunset and the peace and quiet – I love it and can’t wait to go back or discover other trails. Thank you for keeping this app going...

This is an interesting hike offering magnificent views, particularly at this time of year. However, when taking the “Vallon des Glaizes” route from point 6 to point 7, as soon as we reached the high-voltage pylon, it was impossible to continue along the path, which suddenly disappeared. Even after trying to explore the surrounding area, we found no trace of it. Logging operations in this area appear to be the cause. So we turned back and retraced our steps from point 6 to point 5. Immediately after passing under the high-voltage power line, we took the narrow path leading downhill to our right, as marked on the map, to reach point 7, then turned left to rejoin the GR 51 route.

We were looking for the Oppidum; actually, you have to take a small path on the right after the private property.
Then we went too far before point 6, but never mind, the view is lovely.
Finally, we got it wrong again with the ‘discreet path’ as there’s a much more visible track starting from the same spot, so we built a cairn to mark it more clearly.
Otherwise, a lovely walk that we plan to do again in the spring.

This description is intended for experienced hikers; not all sections are straightforward. A few clarifications might be useful:
paragraph 1 – the lovely view of the harbour with its signs is from the roof of the large tank located near this hairpin bend.
Paragraph 6 – The straight trench can be identified as the buried section of the gas pipeline (yellow markers)
An interesting route.
