Double circular loop at Penta-di-Casinca

This accessible walk, suitable even for families, follows paths shaded by dense and varied vegetation (cork oaks, olive trees, chestnut trees, alders) throughout. This walk therefore allows you to explore the region even during the summer months. Starting from the river allows you to cool off there in summer, but you can also set off from the village and take the opportunity to visit it as well. In places, you can catch a glimpse of the village of Penta-Di-Casinca or enjoy the view over the Folelli plain, though this is not the main attraction of this walk. This double circular route can also be walked as a single circular route, and you can start from Penta-di-Casinca instead.

Description of the walk

The route starts from the RD56, where you can park on the hard shoulder, directly opposite the path you need to take.

(S/E) The route starts by following a small tarmac path to the right of the D56, coming from Folelli.

(1) At the end of the tarmac path, head down to the left, then continue for about 350 m.

(2) Carry on along the track, ignoring the one on the right-hand side where you’ll see a ruined house. Continue uphill for about 750 m until you reach a junction.

(3) Take the path on the right, leaving an old path on the left which is now overgrown. Climb up to the next fork.

(4) Follow the path on the left. There is still a signpost indicating a 20 km trail, and it is important to go in the opposite direction to the arrow. Walk uphill for about 1 km, staying on the track and ignoring any forks on the right. You will reach a junction.

(5) Turn right, then immediately keep left.

(6) Carry on straight ahead, ignoring the fork to the right, and head in the opposite direction to the arrow for the 12 km trail. Continue, taking a wide bend to the right, until you reach another fork.

(7) Turn right onto a path bordered by dry-stone walls. Take care and leave this path after 250 metres through a gap in the crumbling wall.

(8) Head off to the left: a short section of this path may be overgrown with ferns depending on the season, but it soon opens out.

(9) Take the path down to the left until you reach a slightly wider track, then rejoin the path you took on the way there, which climbs to the right.

(5) Head left, you’ll soon come out onto a road, and follow it downhill to the right.

(10) Take the path on the right that leads downwards. Continue downhill. Follow the sign for Trail 12 km on the left, and ignore the fork signposting Trail 6 km on the right. Carry on for just over 1 km until you reach a dirt track suitable for vehicles.

(11) Turn right, following the ‘Trail 12 km’ signposting. Return to the dirt track and carry on straight ahead, passing the Foata fountain, which is not running. Further on, cross an olive grove and arrive at a junction.

(12) Follow the sign for ‘Trail 12 km’ by taking the path leading down to the left. Before reaching the dirt track (D6), leave the ‘Trail 12 km’ sign on your right and continue straight on.

(13) Turn right onto the D6 and return to the car park on the side of the RD56 (S/E).
