Deuille d'Ochey and Puits du Chahalot starting from Bicqueley

This walk allows you to discover, particularly in mid-winter (mid-January), the phenomenon of water resurgences near the small village of Bicqueley, a stone’s throw from the town of Toul.
Blue, pure waters, springing up amidst beautiful forests.
Very little elevation gain.

Description of the walk

Leave Bicqueley via the D904 towards Collombey-les-Belles. Shortly after passing a motocross track, park at the start of the dirt track on the right.

(S/E) Retrace your steps and cross the road to take a dirt track on the right, marked with a Red Disc and Red Triangle. This track turns left. Leave the Red Triangle-marked track on your right and continue until you reach a very small road.

(1) Cross a path marked with a Red Saltire and take an unmarked path on the right, at just over a 90° angle. At the next junction, turn right onto a path marked with a Red Disc. You will reach a Y-shaped junction.

(2) Here you have two options:
- stay on the path marked with a Red Disc (this is the Tranchée de Montreuil), then turn right at the junction with the Tranchée de la Deuille,
- take the small path that winds along the right-hand side of the Fork in the road. The difficulty with this path is that it runs through woodcutters’ plots and may be cluttered; follow these woodcutters’ paths to reach the Tranchée de la Deuille (route).

(3) Cross it and continue through the undergrowth opposite, following a well-marked path. Descend towards the Ruisseau de Larot, follow its left bank to reach the Fontaine de la Deuille, crossing the stream via a small wooden bridge.

(4) Go round the Fontaine de la Deuille d’Ochey on the right and take the steep path climbing straight up the slope on the right. You will then reach a main track; take this to the right. Leave it to the right at the next junction to take the path that climbs slightly. You will come to a wider track; follow this for a few metres until you reach another fork.

(5) Take the straight path on the left. Continue straight on until you reach the junction before the Tranchée Colas Maréchal.

(6) Turn right and then take the Tranchée Marhand opposite. Take thethird clearly marked path on the left. Then take a double bend, first turn right then left, to exit the woods at a new junction.

(7) Here too, take a double bend to the left then immediately turn right to enter the woods again; this is the Rond Bois. You will then reach a path that follows the boundary of the district or municipality, marked by stone boundary stones. Continue along this path until you reach the D904 road. Cross it and take the small path that leads into the undergrowth. This path can be overgrown. You will need to go round some large trees.

(8) Continuing on this way, you’ll enter a beautiful pine forest. Join a path marked with a Red Triangle and follow it uphill to the left. Continue straight ahead without following the markings that veer off to the right. The path descends to the Ruisseau du Chahalot. Cross a road and reach the stream.

(9) Cross the stream as soon as possible to reach a path marked with a Red Circle on the other side and continue until you reach the impressive Chahalot Well. A few metres further on, head up to the right of the Fork in the road.

(10) Cross a wide track, continue straight on until you reach a wide track marked with a Red Circle and take it by turning right.
When this main track turns right, continue straight on along the path ahead. You will then come across the Red Triangle markings of the Saltwater Route, which leads to the Trou des Glanes.

(11) Take the road on the left which crosses the Bouvade stream.

(12) When this small road leading to Moutrot turns left, take the path branching off to the right and cross the Bouvade stream, which is slightly to the left of the path. Let the path marked with a Red Triangle descend to the left and continue straight on, climbing slightly. At the end of this climb, you will come to a path marked with a Red Triangle and Red Disc; follow it to the car park on the D904 (S/E).

A lovely walk for those who love the forest, especially on hot days.
We had a bit of trouble finding the route between 7 and 8.
We parked in Bicqueley and returned from Le Trou des Glanes via the path running alongside La Bouvade.
Thank you for this route.

Hello,
Thank you for your various comments, reservations and observations. I will be doing this route again soon, which will give me the opportunity to update it to reflect any paths that have disappeared.
However, as for whether or not there is water in the springs, it is unpredictable, there’s no denying that. And in this era of global warming, of course, this unpredictability is becoming more pronounced.
The best thing is to know someone who lives in the area and ask the standard question around there: “So, are they flowing?”
Happy hiking,
Évelyne

Hello,
A lovely hike, but be careful as some of the logging tracks have disappeared.
So you’ll need to go off-trail.
Otherwise, it’s a lovely walk through the forest.

A lovely walk in the woods, which I extended slightly by parking at Biqueley and taking the cattle track back). It’s a shame that the woods are all undergoing regeneration and that so many paths (at the start) have been rendered difficult to walk on due to forestry work. There were no soldiers, but there were loggers in the areas where access was prohibited, so I ventured in anyway. I was pleased to see the Deuille flowing, which isn’t always the case in these times of drought.Note that after Point 9, to cross the large stream ‘Le Chahalot’, which was running high, there is no footbridge. You have two options: either take your shoes off, or, as I did, cross over a large oak tree that has fallen across the path!

Hello, and thank you for this lovely route.
We chose it at short notice following an unexpected change of plans.
This walk is very pleasant; admittedly, it shouldn’t be done during the hunting season, but it’s a classic in winter. The only solution is to contact the local councils in the areas you’re passing through or the hunting societies, which isn’t always easy.
The Deuille d’Ochey was very low, and the Puits de Chahalot and Trou des Glanes were completely empty, due to the weather conditions. As for the snowfields, they were a bit worn but still lovely. It’s not always easy to be in the right place at the right time.

We were a bit disappointed by the description, which left us puzzled in places:
At point 1, we couldn’t find a path marked with a red saltire to cross; we simply took the first path on the right just after the very narrow road.
At point 2, we opted for the little path that winds its way... indeed, the clearing work had turned the route into a real obstacle course. Not a big deal, really, but after a while you’re not quite sure where to go.
At point 3, we came across a ban on going straight on between points 3 and 4, an area closed off due to army live-fire training exercises. The Visorando practical information specifies this ban between points 2 and 3. After consulting the map, we chose to stay on the Deuille trench which leads to the resurgence.
On this point, in the rush of our departure, we hadn’t checked the Visorando practical information. Mea culpa!!

To help hikers who don’t use a GPS:
At point 6, I noted plot number 20, then between plots 45 and 46, and then at the final left-hand bend just before point 7, between plots 33 and 34
At point 7, the entrance to the woods (plot 34) isn’t very visible.

At point 8, I noticed a large triangular marker just as you have to go up to the left (Red Triangle). But at one point, following the GPS route, we had to turn right and stick to the Red Triangle markings; then a little further on, before reaching the steep descent towards the stream, we missed a path on the left marked with a Red Triangle.
At point 10, just as you leave the main path to go straight on, we followed a Red Ring marker which led us to the Trou des Glanes. On the signs, the Saltwater Route is marked with a Red Ring, not a Red Triangle.

I fear that changes have been made to the signposting. So thank you, ‘Signor GPS’

We came across three quad bikes, which isn’t very pleasant on a hiking trail, but they remained friendly.

Thanks again for this lovely route.

That’s right, we admired lots of snowdrops – they were lovely. We’ll give it another go, hoping there won’t be any motorbikes and that the springs will be flowing. Thank you.

Hello,
I’m sorry to hear that the hike didn’t go well for you. Of course, I suggested it because it went absolutely brilliantly for me. There was plenty of water in the springs, no motorbikes and no cars in the area. There were even a few patches of snow starting to appear.
But it’s true that on these hikes, which are easily accessible to motorists, there is a definite risk on sunny days.
Have a good day

We went on a hike on 15 March, but there was no water in the springs. There was motocross on the hiking route. Lots of walkers were trying to get as close as possible by car. In short, this hike was a complete waste of time.

Hello,
Thank you for the warning you’ve added. Paths blocked by hunters are a real problem for me. Online, I can never find out exactly which woods, let alone which paths, will be affected.
I’ve come to the conclusion that we need to contact the local councils and the local hunting associations. If you have any other ideas, I’d love to hear them.
Have a good day
Evelyne

Finally, some water – I’ve tried several times without success. Please note that hunters are blocking access to some paths.
