From the old canals to the new canal between Seneffe and Godarville

Here is a pleasant circular route mainly along the water’s edge with an unusual point of interest. To explore it properly, bring a torch. You’ll be able to see inside the Godarville boat tunnel, though without actually entering it. Those with a keen eye will spot here and there remnants of times gone by, such as landing stages, bollards or mooring posts, and a variety of birds, including cormorants.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Place de Penne d'Agenais, Rue de Lintermans, in the centre of Seneffe.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn left onto Rue Lintermans, towards the canals, cross over the Samme and then, at the end of thefirst canal on your right, continue right along the path running alongside the canal on your left.

(1) At the road (Drève du Château de Seneffe), cross it and head towards the small bridge on the right. Just before it, turn left and follow the tarmac Ravel path between the Samme and the old canal until you reach thesecond bridge, which is located after a bend in the Ravel path on the left. Cross it to follow theGR® on the right along the opposite bank. The path continues at the end of the small car park located there. At the start of this path, note the old mooring posts. If you have young children with you, be careful: the path is sometimes very close to the water and the uneven ground makes it easy to slip. Continue to the next bridge.

(2) Cross the canal again, then follow the semi-paved path to the left until you reach a gate blocking the way along the canal. The canal runs underground here in the “Souterrain de Godarville”. Go back a few metres and take the small path on the left, which joins the one you left a little earlier. Head up to the left until you reach a flat area with an old canal ventilation shaft on your left. Follow theGR® until you emerge from the woods onto Rue Bête Refaite.

(3) Continue along the path opposite, veering slightly to the right. This path becomes extremely bumpy in its second section and the potholes are often filled with water. Follow the new Charleroi–Brussels Canal whilst staying on the higher ground and in the woods until you reach thefirst clear fork.

(4) Turn left, then left again to stay level with the bridge, which you will soon reach. Cross it and, 20 m further on, take a path down to the right.

(5) Follow this path at mid-level and you will reach a small wood, then a dog training centre, as well as the meeting point for the73rd Baden Powell Sea Scouts unit. After a short descent, you will reach the Ravel and the small marina at Seneffe.

(6) Cross the bridge and continue by turning right to stay on the towpath. As thefirst bridge is closed for repairs, continue along the canal to the N27 bridge. A flight of steps is located just before the bridge, allowing you to cross it.

(7) At the top of the steps, turn right and continue straight on for about 300 m. At the junction with the road on the right, cross it and take a path leading to trail 144. This runs between the back gardens of the houses and a field.

(8) At the end of the path, turn right (Rue du Roi Albert) then left onto Avenue Roi Baudouin. After about 350 m, at a lorry park, take the small path branching off to the right into the woods, join the Ravel and head left. At Drève du Château, continue straight ahead and you will reach Place de Penne d'Agenais (S/E).

Notes

Variations:
(1) Option to follow the path opposite, which runs along the bank with the canal on your right.

(5) Option to stay on the upper level or descend to the Ravel path along the canal, rather than following the path on the middle level.

This path partly follows the markings of the Grandes Randonnées (GR® ) – red and white – as well as those of the Way of St James (see notice), a blue scallop shell and sunbeams pointing towards the rest of the path.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Pass by the Canal Observatory and the old lift bridge in front of the library.

Visit the Goldsmithing Museum in Seneffe Castle.

Go and see the Ronquières inclined plane a few kilometres from Seneffe, as well as the boat lifts at Thieu – the old ones, remarkable relics of the past still in operation, and the new ones.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Superb walk along the water! As it is a Ravel, there are few cyclists. We will do it again as we did not complete the entire route.

Good evening, I'm sorry to hear that. I don't understand this orientation problem because, personally, it's something I take very seriously and, besides, the other reviews of this hike always give it 5 stars. For me, the only place you need to be careful is in the woods before point (3). Or perhaps there is a problem with your device? I hope not. Thank you for your feedback. Perhaps you could let me know what needs to be corrected so that I can fix it...

We couldn't find our bearings properly, so the whole hike turned into a search on my mobile phone maps.
Disappointing

A charming stroll along the banks of the old and new Brussels-Charleroi Canal turns into a real journey through time. After the narrow paths running alongside the old canal and its peaceful atmosphere, the vast expanse of the new canal opens up, with its huge basin and marina dotted with yachts.

Good evening and thank you for your feedback. I can understand your disappointment regarding the final stretch of the route and the fact that these sections are, unfortunately, urban and uninteresting (they are, moreover, the only inhabited or formerly industrial areas). As mentioned in point (6), we were forced to go that way because of the repairs to the bridge we wanted to take to reach the towpath on the other side and return via the old bascule bridge.
As for footwear, I personally recommend waterproof walking boots rather than wellington boots, but, yes, both are essential in wet weather.

The main attraction of this walk is the presence of water along the canals, with ducks and other birds, as the surroundings are often urban or industrial, and we found the end of the walk rather uninteresting.
The walk takes you along a lovely path through the woods, but in wet weather, wellies are essential and there are a few spots that are a bit dangerous with children (though this is mentioned in the description).

Dear brother on the Way,
I myself walked the Camino del Norte and the Camino Primitivo 13 years ago, and three years ago the St-Guilhem routes (published in a book), so I am very aware of this. I have, in fact, noted this in the Ittre walk, which will appear shortly on Visorando. I forgot to do so here. My sincerest apologies, and I’ll rectify this oversight immediately.
And I hope you have a wonderful time on the Way, whether it be to Santiago or an inner journey.

As a member of the Belgian Association of Friends of Santiago de Compostela, I occasionally walk the Via Gallia Belgica (from Hélécine to Vieux-Reng, where this hike begins). The signposting for the Camino de Santiago is blue with a stylised yellow scallop shell, which follows the GR trail markings.
Thank you very much for highlighting this section of the Via Gallia Belgica.
