Description of the walk

Park at the Pont Saint-Barnabé car park, which is opposite the hotel of the same name.

(S/E) Cross the road and take the forest track marked with a Red Disc. This path runs past a few houses and meadows.

(1) Leave the forest road and take a path with the same markings. The climb is steeper and runs alongside a tiny stream. You’ll arrive at a clearing (a large crossroads): the Munsteraeckerle, with tables and benches, as well as a pretty little shelter with two benches inside.

(2) Cross the clearing and continue towards Ebeneck by taking, heading south-west, a path marked with red-white-red Red Rectangles in the direction of Ebeneck – Grand Ballon. The path climbs and passes through a pine forest, then reaches the stubble fields from below. Continue climbing along the path. At the end of the path, take a footpath to leave the pasture. You’ll reach a forest track; continue to the right towards Ebeneck, where a table and benches are situated on a bend.

(3) Leave the forest track and continue to the right across the stubble towards the summit of Ebeneck, where the view is magnificent: a small white bench invites you to linger.

(4) Retrace your steps and take a passage through the fence on the right.

(5) Turn right and head down towards Munsteraeckerle, following the Blue Triangle markings, until you reach a forest track.

(6) Follow it to the right and continue towards the clearing you passed on the way out (large multi-way junction): Munsteraeckerle, still following the same markings.

(2) Continue straight ahead, due east, towards the Col de Peternit along the forest road, marked with red rectangles (red, white, red) and white rectangles, which is relatively flat.

(7) At the pass, where there are benches and tables, turn left onto a small path below and follow the Yellow Disc markings

(8) Cross the forest road, continue along the path with the same markings and come out onto the forest road taken at the start. Turn right to reach the Pont Saint-Barnabé car park (S/E).

Notes

Please note: there are two ways to reach Ebeneck following the same Red-White-Red markings from Munsteraeckerle; you can either take the path along the small trail or the one along the forest road. If you choose the route starting on the forest road rather than the trail, the circular route will be in the opposite direction!
Walking shoes recommended.
Plenty of picnic areas.
Munsteraeckerle shelter (2).

A very pleasant cooked circuit with a good elevation gain and exceptional views at the summit. We were lucky to do it in good weather, with magnificent views of the Alps

A busy trail on Ascension Thursday.
The elevation gain was much greater than stated; my tracklog recorded 700m+!
It’s a shame that the second part of the circular route doesn’t offer a clear view.

A lovely walk through the woods with a few scenic spots. A quick bite to eat at the top of Ebeneck is the perfect way to enjoy the view over the plain.

A great warm-up to start with; it was very windy at the summit and the overcast weather meant we couldn’t enjoy a very good view. It was indeed almost 10km – quite a physical challenge, so it’s best to have good shoes and walking poles. We had a picnic sheltered at Munsterakele.
