Explore south-east Metz, amongst forts, orchards and lakes

Starting from Fort Queuleu, this walk will allow you to discover or rediscover the varied landscapes of southern Metz. After exploring the surroundings of Fort Queuleu, a historic landmark, you will reach the village of Peltre and its famous orchards, where you will have the opportunity to pick fruit depending on the season and your preferences. This village was named in 2020 and 2021 in the ranking of the best places to live among towns with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. You will then return towards the Technopole district, walking along the paths of Lakes Ariane and Symphonie, two biodiversity reserves.

Description of the walk

The entrance to Fort Queuleu has a car park open 24 hours a day. The starting point is also accessible by bus (line 4).

(S/E) The start is opposite the first entrance to the fort. Take the path leading off to the right, following the wall with the monument to the deportees on your left, and take the first path leading off to the left into the dense forest bordering Fort Queuleu. Ignore all paths leading off to the right until you reach the three-way junction at the southernmost point of the fort.

(1) Walk up the hill to the right and stay on the path that emerges from the forest and heads straight across the fields. Pass the water treatment plant and ignore the path branching off to the left towards Grigy.

(2) Go over the dual carriageway and stay on this path which winds its way to Peltre. Ignore the roads branching off to the left and head for the Peltre football pitches.

(3) Pass the town hall on your left, then take Rue de Gargan, which branches off to the left. Stay on this street until you reach Rue de la Horgne and enter the housing estate via this street, continuing along it to the end. After leaving the street by taking the path straight ahead, you’ll reach a dirt track.

(4) Turn left onto it. You will arrive at the edge of the farm known as "Les cueillettes de Peltre", a large market garden open to the public. Walk alongside the farm with the greenhouses on your right, then turn right onto the tarmac road, then right again to arrive in front of the farm’s main entrance.

(5) Please note that this section requires you to use the vehicle access road and cross two roundabouts without dedicated pedestrian crossings. There is little traffic, but it is important to keep to your left as you head up towards the access road. When you reach the first roundabout, keep to the left and cross with care. Do the same at the second roundabout after crossing the bridge over the dual carriageway towards Mercy. At this second roundabout, cross over to reach a tarmac footpath. Turn left towards Mercy and turn left at the pedestrian crossing. Walk down for a few dozen metres and cross over to reach the pavement on the opposite side.

(6) Turn left, keeping the tram tracks on your left. Stay on this footpath for nearly a kilometre and continue along the footpath after passing the “Parc des Expositions” tram stop. Join Route d’Ars Laquenex and turn right onto it.

(7) Cross Route d'Ars Laquenex via the pedestrian path at the roundabout, and enter Parc du Lac Ariane. Walk along the lake on the pedestrian path that goes straight ahead. Just after the business park, take the path that enters the forest, markedGR®5(red and white). Stay on this path, following theGR® markings as you leave the woods, walk alongside the housing estate and take the footbridge, turning left.

(8) Cross the Bois de la Macchabée, staying on theGR®5. After crossing the public area of the Golf Technopole, join Rue Felix Savart and turn right.

(9) Turn left to continue along theGR®5, which winds through the university district. When you reach the edge of Lac Symphonie, take the path on the left.

(10) Leave theGR®5and walk along Lac Symphonie via the Chemin Ouest. At the end of the lake, turn left onto the path that runs alongside Boulevard Solidarité on your right. At the Général Susane roundabout, cross once straight ahead and then turn left to reach the Chamber of Commerce. Continue along the boulevard and pass the prison. Then take the first tarmac road on the left to return to the car park (S/E).

Apart from the roundabout section, the rest of the walk is pleasant. It’s very muddy at this time of year, which is to be expected.

A pleasant walking route. Minimal elevation gain. Few sections through built-up areas. Passes through countryside and wooded areas. Spotted several deer at the edge of the forest.
An easy hike suitable for walkers of all abilities.

Hello,
I went on this hike with my students during one of my teaching placements.
Everyone loved it.
We completed the circular route in 2 hours and 35 minutes instead of 4 hours.
I really recommend it – it’s brilliant. You get to explore our region, and people were amazed to see the lakes, including those following our adventure on social media.
