There should be no problem parking your vehicle in the centre of Viriville. Choose a spot between the small market hall and the pharmacy on Grande Rue Jeanne Sappey.
(S/E) Leave Viriville via the Marnans road, which starts at the corner of the small market hall (D156c). Then take the first street on the left (near a fountain marked "eau non contrôlée" or "unregulated water") called Rue de la Passetière. Go straight across the crossroads and you will come to a left-hand bend.
(1) Follow a small path that climbs to the right (east). You will come to a small tarmac road, which you take to the right (south-east). The path will be marked in yellow until you reach the village of Marnans. The markings are recent, but sometimes sketchy (October 2015). Cross the hamlet of Saint-Baudille until you reach the end.
(2) Follow the markings and take a path that climbs to the left. Continue climbing until you reach the statue of the Virgin of Saint-Baudille. Cross the clearing, then descend on the opposite side. Pass a path on the right, then one on the left, and turn right at the first intersection. Do the same at the next four intersections (following the yellow markings) and you will reach the hamlet of Les Gargonnes at the junction with the D156c.
(3). Follow it to the left for a few metres, then left again until you reach the end of the hamlet. Climb up to the right. At the top of the hill, you will pass the very pretty group of houses known as Les Bonnettes.
(4) Continue straight ahead, then after a left turn followed by a right turn, take the path on the right.
(5) Leave your path and follow the other path downhill to the departmental road. On this road, which you have taken to the left, turn right to reach the charming village of Marnans and its remarkable church. Walk along the right-hand side until you reach the cemetery.
(6) Until now, you have been walking generally south-east. Now begin your return journey, generally north-west. Take the path opposite the cemetery and leave the marked trail (yellow cross and a sign saying "no quad bikes"). Follow a pleasant flat path. After rain, there is a small ford that may require you to get your feet wet...
(7) When you come out onto a wide stone path, take it to the left. It climbs a little. You will then arrive at a small tarmac road.
(8) Take this road to the right (north-west). It leads to a place called "Maison Cara". Here, turn left onto the path that goes downhill. When you reach a meadow, turn right and follow this wide path until you reach the D156 departmental road.
(9) Take this road to the left for 30 metres (be careful, cars drive fast here). Turn into the first small road on the right: you are now in the hamlet of Gallix. Turn immediately right and continue straight on to the hamlet of Le Puits. In this hamlet, after the first house on your left, turn left again.
(10) Immediately turn right onto a well-maintained grassy path. It is not easy to find as it looks like you are entering a private courtyard. Continue along this grassy path until you reach a small road, which you follow to the right.
(11) Before the bridge, climb a small log staircase on the left (be careful if it is wet, as the logs can be slippery).
You are now on the old tram line that ran from Lyon to Saint-Marcelin in the early 20th century. Take the track on the right and then cross the D156 again. Note the wide curve in the road, which corresponds to the tram line. You will come out onto the D156c, which you take to the left. Enter Viriville and return to your parking spot (S/E).
