From Villeneuves-lès-Béziers to Portiragnes via the Canal du Midi

A short walk along the Canal du Midi and its locks, via the Voie Verte. A fairly shaded route, then a short stretch through the vineyards as you skirt around Portiragnes, following the banks of the Grande Maïre. At the end of the route, you pass through the Portiragnes Marshes and the Lac de la Grande Maïre.

Description of the walk

Car park near Villeneuve-les-Béziers Town Hall.

(S) Set off along Rue Louis Rouvier, heading towards the Canal du Midi, for about 200 metres. Cross Boulevard Pasteur and head for the banks of the Canal du Midi and the Voie Verte.

(1) Turn right and follow the cycle path alongside the canal.

(2) Cross the bridge under the Route de Sérignan (D64), then continue straight on.

(3) Cross the bridge under theD37E16. Follow the Plaine on your right-hand side, then arrive at the Pont de Caylus.

(4) Cross the road and carry on straight ahead. Follow the Canal du Midi, then arrive at the lock.

(5) Turn right, pass the pumping station and carry on straight ahead along the Chemin de la Carrière du Grand Salan until you reach the third road on the right.

(6) At the crossroads, turn right and keep going straight on, ignoring the other paths on either side. You’ll reach the bridge over the Grande Maïre.

(7) Carry on to the left without crossing the bridge and follow the Grande Maïre. Pass a pond and continue to the end.

(8) Turn left and walk alongside the Étang de la Riviérette, which is on your right.

(9) Turn right and continue along the edge of the lake until you reach the pumping station, opposite the holiday village.

(10) Turn right onto Avenue de la Grande Maïre. Go round a roundabout and continue to follow the Étang de la Riviérette until you reach the Portiragnes Plage car park (E).
