From Villar-Loubière to La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar via Lac du Lautier

A beautiful, varied hike with stunning views and a lake perfect for relaxing. A pleasant climb (a little steep at the start and very end), in the shade (early in the morning) for a good half of the route; a fairly long and difficult descent over scree. A full day's hike.
Use the shuttle bus or bring two vehicles.

Description of the walk

(S) Drive to the top of the village of Villar-Loubière. Follow the signs for "Refuge des Souffles, Lac du Lautier". GR® white-red markings. A pleasant, steady climb, in the shade of the rock face in the morning, then sheltered by trees. A little steep at first, then it gets better.

(1) At an unmarked fork, continue climbing to the right, following the white-red markings.

(2) At the fork in the climb, leave the white-red markings and turn right towards "Lac du Lautier".

(3) Shortly after the end of the forest, at the crossroads, turn right towards "Lac du Lautier". The climb remains gentle, then steeper but steady, with fewer and fewer trees.

(4) Cross a large, fairly bare cirque. Zigzag up towards the clearly visible Col des Clochettes.

(5) The nearby Col des Clochettes is not for us. Turn right onto an increasingly steep and rocky climb.

(6) Continue climbing on an increasingly steep path through the rocks until you reach a pass that is invisible from below and unnamed on the map. Lac du Lautier is just behind the pass. This picture-postcard lake is the perfect place for a nap.

Reach the small Col des Colombes.

(7) Follow the fairly steep descent through a vast scree slope, along a well-marked trail.

(8) At the fork, take the right-hand path downhill through the scree (no signposts), towards "La Chapelle en Valgaudemar".

(9) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead downhill on an obvious path.

(10) At the trail junction, continue downhill. White-red GR® markings.

(11) When you reach the road, turn right and head towards La Chapelle en Valgaudemar (E).
