From Saint-Hilaire-de-la-Côte to the airport

A short, easy walk in the heart of the Bièvre plain. You’ll enjoy views of the surrounding peaks: Chartreuse, Vercors, Pilat.
Halfway along the route, you’ll walk alongside the runway at Saint-Geoirs Airport and may be lucky enough to see a plane taking off or landing.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the car park at Saint-Hilaire Town Hall, situated along the D73, heading westwards along this road, i.e. towards La Côte-Saint-André. You’ll pass a pizzeria, a discount store and the Chemin de la Beauté (don’t worry, you’ll take that on the way back...).

(1) As you leave the village, turn left onto Chemin du Marronnier, a quiet, tarmac-surfaced road. You’re heading south, towards the plain, with the Chambarans hills ahead of you. Keep heading in this direction until you reach the airport.

(2) When your small road turns left, take the dirt track that leads straight ahead. Ignore the paths leading off to the right or left

(3) There is a tiny copse on your right. At the edge of it, you come out onto a dirt track. Take it to the left. At a junction, carry straight on and you will reach a fence with a gate. This is the airport.

(4) Turn left. Follow the fence until you reach a small, isolated building on the right with a mural on the gable end extolling the virtues of skydiving.

(5) Take the dirt track on your left. Almost immediately, ignore the path on the right and continue straight ahead along a grassy track. You’ll see a hillock in front of you, with an eggshell-coloured plastered house standing out against it.

You’ll pass to the left of it. You’ll come out onto another dirt track, which you take to the left. Very soon, you’ll do the opposite and turn right. Ignore a path branching off to the left. You’ll cross a small road and continue straight ahead onto the Chemin de l’Échos. Watch out, make the most of it – you’re climbing the only steep slope of the walk.

(6) You arrive at the house I mentioned earlier. It is number 110. Carry on, heading back down. A path joins from your left. You’ll soon come to a crossroads.

(7) Right in front of you is the "Chemin de la Beauté"! You won’t need to be asked twice – take it.

(8) When you reach an electricity pylon, the path turns left. You follow it. Upon reaching the first houses of Saint-Hilaire, you leave it – reluctantly, of course – to take a stony path on the right, the Chemin des Blachettes.

When you reach the end of it, turn left. You’ll come to the back of the Town Hall. A porch on the left allows you to return to your car park without having to go round the building (S/E).

Notes

Saint-Hilaire-de-la-Côte is a small village situated in the heart of Isère, between La Frette and La Côte-Saint-André.
You can park your car in the very large car park to the west of the Town Hall, along the D73.
There are no signposts along the walk.

Worth a visit

This very flat walk offers beautiful views of the surrounding peaks.
Halfway along the route, between landmarks No. (4) and (5), you will walk alongside the runways of the small Grenoble-Saint-Geoirs airport. It sees very little traffic, with one exception: on Saturdays from January to April, whilst the ski resorts are open. If your aim is to watch planes landing or taking off, choose this period and this day. Otherwise, do the opposite.

A pleasant, easy walk with lovely views of the Vercors, Belledonne, etc. … But one small issue is that it’s quite sunny (no shade)

Very pleasant and easy hike. Perhaps not enough shade in the heat of the day.

A very pleasant walk in February, under a beautiful sun that lit up the snow-covered mountains: magnificent views of the Vercors, Belledonne and as far as Savoie on the Chartreuse side. We chose a Saturday when there was a lot of snowfall to watch the planes land and take off. And we were spoiled!
The little paths that take us across part of the plain are quiet. But we didn't see the pig!
Thank you for the route.

A lovely walk across a stretch of flat countryside, with the Chartreuse, Belledonne and Vercors mountain ranges as a backdrop on the way out, and the Bièvre hills on the way back.
Best done when traffic at Grenoble Isère Airport is at its lowest.

The lady had her back to me; she was lost in thought, so I didn’t dare disturb her :-)

Did you try giving your stale bread to the lady?

Hello,

I’d like to thank the author for this stroll through the countryside. There really is a lovely view of the mountains.
I stopped for a bit to watch the planes fly by, but there aren’t many (COVID?)
The friendly pig wasn’t there; there was a lady sitting in the pen with some chickens :-)
I wouldn’t recommend this walk in the height of summer as there isn’t much shade.

Thanks for your comments – I was in stitches about the pig!! You really do need to avoid overfeeding it, though

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and for pointing out the pig. (I hope it won’t be overweight in a few months’ time...)

A lovely walk with lovely views of the mountains. No spectacular spots, but a very pleasant walk given the current situation and the mandatory return by 6pm. That said, I’d like to thank the author for this little gem and, above all, for the detailed route description. Around point 6, there’s a friendly pig (see the sign), so if you’ve got any dry breadcrumbs, pop them in your pocket – he’ll be delighted to see you.
