A pleasant, varied little hike that takes you through the narrow streets of La-Côte-Saint-André, then along the ridges to enjoy beautiful views of the mountains.

Description of the walk

On leaving Gillonnay, heading towards La-Côte-Saint-André, turn right and head for the cemetery car park.

(S/E) Head west on theGR®65(Way of St James). Follow this path until you reach the junction with Chemin du Pollard.

(1) Turn left and continue to follow theGR®. Cross Avenue de Verdun and climb up to Rue du Château.

(2) Go down the stairs and take the alley on the right. Follow the red and white markings. Walk through the alleys, pass Place de la Halle, continue along Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, cross Rue des Cordiers and continue along Rue du Commandant Julhiet until you reach the junction with Avenue Jongkind.

(3) From here, you have two options:
- follow Avenue Jongkind on the west side, then take the third street on the right.
- Walk along the cemetery (see attached map) on a less busy street, but be aware that it may be difficult to pass through as it is not maintained.
Cross the avenue and follow Rue du Commandant Julhiet opposite. Leave the cemetery on your right, then immediately turn right. Follow this road. You will soon be walking along a wall until you reach a left-hand bend.

(4) At the bend:
- turn right onto the path heading north. When you reach the road, take the pavement opposite and turn left. Turn into the first street that goes up to the right, then the first street on the left. Follow this street, which turns into a path. Continue until you see a barn on your left. Join the street 100 metres further on.
- If the path is overgrown, continue straight ahead. Do not cross the D518a, but turn right, north, onto Chemin des Roches. At the left-hand bend, continue straight ahead along a path and rejoin the D518. Cross it and continue as described.

(5) Go down this road opposite, until you reach the Commelle road.

(6) Go up the road on the left, then take the first road on the right. Follow it to the chapel.

(7) In front of the chapel, take advantage of the orientation table. There is a beautiful view of the Chartreuse, Belledonne and Vercors mountains. Continue eastwards. Head straight ahead, ignoring the path on the left, towards the Jars farm. Continue to the right towards the reservoir.

(8) Begin the descent, walking alongside the forest. At the crossroads, turn right onto the Corche Bœuf path, then turn left onto the D71, the Route de Champier.

(9) Cross the road, then take the street on the right and continue to the next crossroads.

(10) Go up opposite. Walk along the forest. Follow this road to the first houses of Notre-Dame. At the crossroads, turn right. Continue to the crossroads towards the Notre-Dame du Mont Chapel.

(11) Take a detour to the chapel. You will also find a lovely viewpoint.

(12) Go around the chapel to retrace your steps.

(11) Back at the crossroads, turn right heading south. At the next bend, take the Calvary path that descends opposite. At the bottom, take the street on the left, then immediately right. All you have to do is follow this street to the cemetery car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views and stunning vistas. I had a great time; it's very peaceful with little traffic, despite much of the hike being on tarmac.

At point 4, the path is impassable at this time of year unless you fly over the brambles and nettles (my legs ). I ended up getting through, but the brush was taller than me in places and I was on the path, it just isn't maintained at all. I recommend taking Av Jonking at point 3 and continuing straight ahead (main road) until you reach the street that goes up to the right, as described in point 4.

Point 6 is private property, and it is impossible to pass unless you go through the barbed wire fence around the field. Perhaps it was passable in the past, but that is no longer the case. The owners have asked Google Maps to remove this path from the map.
So after point 5, take the first left (it climbs a little) and then follow Chemin de Cuchère until you reach point 7.

I think it is necessary to modify point 6 to avoid disappointment. And add an alternative to point 4 as well.

PLEASE NOTE
The path indicated as closed in the Visorando description is indeed private and closed. However, there are no signs indicating where to pass along the fence, as specified by Visorando. We climbed up the field on the left, had to cross a bramble patch and then pass under barbed wire twice before finding the normal route.

The directions are too vague! In fact, it's impossible to find the route without GPS!

Please note that between points 6 and 7 you will be passing through private property. Before point 6, near a farm, take the road uphill to the left, then 500 metres further on, turn right twice onto Chemin de Cuchére to reach the chapel and the point.

We extended the route a little via the St Michel chapel, Sciez and then on to Mont Avalon to keep us busy for a good day's walk covering 20 km.
The view was clear and the panorama of the snow-capped mountains was superb!
The Bièvre plain is starting to turn green.
The religious buildings are interesting, but it's a shame that access to the interiors is still closed!
Thanks to the author.
