From Saint-Barthélémy-De-Vals to Claveyson

An easy walk through the Drôme hills, including a section near the River Galaure. The route alternates between quiet roads, pebbly or very sandy paths, and deep ravines carved out by erosion.

Description of the walk

Starting from the village of Saint-Barthélémy-De-Vals, in the Drôme department.
Located 7 km east of the town of Saint-Vallier, itself situated 35 km north of Valence.
Parking is available in the village centre, at Place de La Liberté, near the fire station.

(S/E) From the park on Place de La Liberté, north of Rue du Vercors, head north, passing the emergency services centre on your right.

(1) Before reaching the river, turn right and cross two branches of the river. Walk 600 m along the river, then turn right towards the nearby Route du Lac.

(2) Follow the road past the Vernets Leisure Centre on your left. Head to the right and go under the motorway. The road curves to the right.

(3) Follow the road to the junction. Ignore the first road branching off to the left and take the second one heading north-east, called Route de la Saisonnière. Pass the first house on your left, then reach and pass through the hamlet of La Sizonnière (or Saisonnière). 350 m from the hamlet, leave the road and turn right onto a grassy track.

(4) Follow this track to Route Neuve and turn right, continuing for 100 m. Leave the road and head diagonally left towards the fields. Cross the fields along a very sandy path and reach Route de Claveyson, near the hamlet of La Blachette. Cross the road, take the path opposite and go through the woods. After passing a fenced-off property, you’ll come to a stony path.

(5) Take this path to the left. Walk past the Maison des Rivoires and reach Route de Blache Longue, near a business park. Continue left for 100 metres, then turn right to cross over the TGV line.

(6) After 500 m, leave the road and head north, turning left. After 250 m, when the path curves to the left, leave the path and take the footpath on the right, which runs alongside a stream to the village of Claveyson.

(7) Opposite the town hall, turn right to cross the car park. At the end of the car park, turn left onto Allée Des Chênes and follow it for 50 m. Leave this street and head uphill to the right until you reach a junction.

(8) Continue along the path opposite, running alongside a house below on the right. The path, which is very sandy, follows the edge of the forest to the highest point where the path enters the woodland.

(9) Take the narrow path leading down to the right. After a 400-metre descent, ignore a path branching off to the left and take a tight hairpin bend to the right for 50 metres. On a level stretch, ignore the paths branching off to the right and then take a hairpin bend to the left. The sandy path climbs, at times forming steps with the rocks, before descending towards a very deep ravine. Go round the heavily eroded ravine along a flat path to reach another path.

(10) Take the path winding steeply uphill to the left. You’ll arrive near a house; head towards it, ignoring a path branching off to the left. Pass the buildings and, without any confusion, continue on to reach a road, which you should then follow to the right towards the hamlet of Bonneton.

(1) Continue along a main road 300 m from the hamlet; watch out for traffic. Cross the road opposite to take the Route des Olagnates. Climb up to the ridge, then descend towards a junction.

(12) Ignore the roads to the left and right; continue straight ahead and cross over the TGV line. After 250 m, you’ll reach a main road – watch out for traffic. Turn left for 70 m, then leave the road and take the path leading uphill to the right, through the fields. Reach the forest and continue for 100 m until you come to a crossroads. Head down the path on the left, which is very stony, to leave the woodland and cross an area of meadows with farm buildings on the left. You’ll reach the D109; watch out for traffic.

(13) Follow this road to the right for 100 metres. Then turn left towards the south onto Route de Pied Buisson, climbing for 900 metres until you reach a crossroads. Continue for 250 metres along Chemin Lafay, which climbs to the left.

(14) At the top, take the path leading off to the right into the woods. After 200 m, ignore a turn-off to the left and follow the edge of the woods. You’ll reach a road called Chemin de Bornarin; follow it uphill to the right until you reach the hamlet of Thivolle.

(15) Turn right as soon as you’ve passed the house and cross through the woodland to reach the area near the motorway. Go left under the motorway via Route de Chantemerle and, after 200 m, turn right onto Route de Combe Jacquet, which runs alongside the SYTRAD household waste treatment facilities on the left. Continue uphill until you reach Route de Larnage.

(16) Turn right and continue for 400 m until you reach the houses on the left. Leave the road and follow the path on the right, towards the fruit trees. This path curves to the left, then continues slightly downhill, almost in a straight line. Near the buildings at Marnas, take a sharp left, then, after 40 m, a sharp right, along the Chemin de Chauret, until you reach a junction.

(17) Turn left onto Route de Marnas. Ignore the turn-offs to the left and right leading to the housing estates. Pass a winged statue on a plinth on the right. Ignore Rue du 8 Mai 1945 branching off to the left and continue, veering slightly to the right, until you reach Route de Saint-Donat; watch out for traffic.

(18) Turn left towards the village. Go round the roundabout and continue for 250 m along Rue du Vercors, then turn right onto Chemin du Lavoir and return to the car park at Place de la Liberté (S/E).

Some lovely spots, but also plenty of tarmac. The few cars we came across were always a nuisance. You can hear the motorway for an hour at the start of the route and another hour at the end. There’s a café in the car park at the start, perfect for a coffee before and after your ride.

A lovely walk, the only slight downside being that it was 50 per cent footpaths and 50 per cent road. As for the descent into a very deep valley, anyone can do it – it really isn’t difficult at all. We’d really expected a very steep descent, but it wasn’t at all.
