From Lorry-lès-Metz to the Vieille Hage farm (Tintigny – Belgium)

For this first stage, the route seems very direct but stays well away from the main roads. It follows country lanes, tracks reserved for farm machinery, forest paths and cycle paths!

Description of the route

The walk starts at the church in Lorry-lès-Metz; there is parking nearby.

(S) With your back to the church, turn left onto the road (D51) and head towards a small roundabout in Amanvillers. At this small roundabout, turn left. At the traffic lights, cross the road and head to No. 8 Grand’Rue.

(1) Opposite this address, turn right, then a few metres further on, turn left into Rue de la Poste. At the T-junction, turn right onto Rue de Derrière les Jardins, which runs round the centre of the village. At the five-way junction, veer slightly to the right and follow Rue du Vieux Chemin. Leave the village and continue along a track reserved for farm machinery.
After 2 km, you’ll reach a four-way junction.Cross the D135with care. Turn right onto the cycle path, which then runs alongside the road (D135). Cross the D135 again to reach Saint-Ail, then arrive at the junction with Avenue Gambetta (D643) in Sainte-Marie-aux-Chênes.

(2) Turn left and follow this departmental road until you reach a junction at the bottom of the descent in Auboué.

(3) Turn right for 50 m, then turn left onto the narrow lane leading to the footbridge over the Orne.

(4) Cross the bridge and turn left onto Rue du 11 Novembre. Cross the main road by first turning left then right, and head up Rue de l’Église. Follow this road; after the last houses in the housing estate, the road continues as a track that climbs along the edge of the woods, then through the fields beneath the medium-voltage power line until it reaches a road (D163).

(5) Turn right onto this road and head down towards Briey town centre, crossing the bridge.

(6) At the end of this, turn left towards the Tourist Office on the one-way road. Carry on straight ahead alongside the stream until you reach a large car park. Cross the car park and, at the far end, turn left onto the path that runs alongside the Sangsue lake. Just past the small hut, head up a few metres to the left to reach the old railway line, which has been converted into a cycle path.

(7) Follow this greenway, which climbs very gradually, to Mancieulles.

(8) At the end, turn right, then take the road on the left, enter the town and follow theD146C along Rue du Maréchal Foch to the four-way junction.

(9) Turn left onto Rue de la Passerelle and, at the roundabout, turn right onto theD146D, towards Tucquegnieux.

(10) At the junction with the D145, turn left, drive through Mairy and head for No. 24.

(11) Turn right at the corner of the house; at the next junction, turn left and head up to Mont-Bonvillers. Take thefirst street on the left, pass the cemetery, then carry on straight ahead until you reach the junction with the War Memorial on your left.

(12) Carry on straight ahead (D952), cross the bridge over the railway line and follow this departmental road.

(13) Cross the D156 with care and continue straight ahead on the D952. Follow this road, passing through Murville and then Mercy-le-Haut, before descending to the bottom of the valley. Pass under the railway bridge and head uphill to the four-way junction.

(14) Turn left onto the D16, towards Ville-au-Montois. As you enter the village, at the wayside cross on your left, take thefirst street on the right and follow Rue des Tilleuls. Cross Rue Raymond Poincaré and continue along the track heading due north. Enter the forest and reach a road (D25).

(15) Follow it to the right until you reach the centre of Laix. Pass the town hall and continue to the junction with the D25.

(16) Ignore it and turn left onto Rue du Château d’Eau, continuing along a dirt track which soon becomes overgrown with grass. Walk for a good kilometre and, at the T-junction, turn right. Then keep left to reach a track suitable for vehicles.

(17) Carry on to the right, then keep left. Walk alongside a meadow with blockhouses on your right until you reach a four-way junction.

(18) Leave the track and continue to the right, slightly uphill. At the three-way junction at the edge of the woods, turn right, pass through the hamlet of Praucourt and you’ll soon reach a crossroad (D18).

(19) Cross it carefully and head along the small road opposite. At the four-way junction, carry on straight ahead and continue to the next fork. Turn left downhill towards the Château de Cons-la-Granville, a small town nestled at the bottom of the Chiers valley.

(20) Turn right onto the D172, Route de Longwy, towards Gorcy for 400 metres, then turn left uphill onto Rue des Carrières. In Villers-la-Chèvre, pass the cemetery and then the church, and you’ll reach a three-way junction with the town hall.

(21) Turn right onto Rue des Écoles, cross the D618 and take Chemin du Bois de Saint-Pancré opposite. Pass by the foot of a wind turbine and, at the four-way junction, turn left. Enter the forest and continue to a three-way junction.

(23) Carry on along the road until you reach the junction with the D29 at Ville-Houdlémont.

(24) Carry on straight ahead along theD29G, Rue de la Douane, towards Signeulx, until you reach the Belgian border.

(25) Cross the border whilst crossing the bridge over the Vire and, in Signeulx, turn left for 250 m (Rue du Centre) then right onto Rue de la Chavée, a cycle route signposted with green arrows towards junction no. 33. Follow this road to the church in Bleid.

(26) Continue towards Arlon and, at the three-way junction (junction no. 31), turn left until you reach another three-way junction by a wayside cross on your left.

(27) Turn left, enter Ethe, and look for Rue du Professeur Liégeois on the right, a few metres before Rue des Fusillés (junction no. 30).

(28) Turn right, cross the bridge over the Ton and, at the end of the street, turn right towards junction no. 93. At the end of Rue Nouvelle, with the school on your left, turn right (Rue de la Gare, N82) and head towards No. 16. Take the Chemin Touristique just after that on the left and you’ll soon reach the old railway line, which has been converted into a cycle path (RAVeL in Belgium).

(29) Follow this path and, after a very gentle 7 km climb along the RAVeL L155, you’ll reach a road.

(30) Follow it to the right for 150 metres (track) then cross it carefully to take the forest path opposite. Follow this for about 1 km, then cross the N879 with care and continue through the woodland opposite until the next junction.

(31) Turn right, then carry on straight ahead. At the edge of the forest, continue to the right (the Vieille Hage farm is visible below the pasture), then turn left at the next crossroads and head for the farm’s campsite (E).
