Description of the walk

Parking at Parkplaz at the entrance to Duerfstrooss in Kautenbach.

(S/E) With the Clerve river on your left, go up the main road and head towards the level crossing. Cross it and turn right.

Marking CFL07

(1) Take the path on your left. Go up and, at the road, cross carefully diagonally to the right towards the stairs. Take them and go up to the wide forest path.

(2) Turn left. Follow the main path for just under 1 km and, at the fork, continue to the right. Descend and pass a muddy section. Continue to an intersection.

(3) Turn left and climb the winding path. The trail runs parallel to a wider path (not shown on the map). When you reach a wide path (not shown on the map), turn left. Turn right quickly and take another winding path uphill. Continue to an intersection.

(4) Continue to the right. The path turns left. Descend until you see a trail on your right.
(Do not stay on the wide path. Not shown on the map)

(5) Turn right. Cross a pontoon and continue. Further on, cross asecond pontoon. Now climb the winding path. At the top, you will come to a T-junction. Leave the marked trail.

No markings

(6) Turn right onto the less-used forest path. Descend to the road, staying on the main path. Turn right. Walk carefully along the N25 for 200 m. At the beginning of the bend, take a sharp left turn onto the forest path. At the fenced meadow, continue to the left. Descend to the road.

(7) Continue to the right. Cross the Merkholtz level crossing. Go up the road and ignore the cycle path on your right. Continue along the hairpin bend to the left, still on the road, for 200 m until you reach the grassy path on your right.

(8) Go up to the right. At the road, cross carefully and continue along the path opposite. The path turns right. Continue uphill and, at the junction, turn left. At the road, look for the faint path opposite with a blue post + K sign at its entrance. Take this path and pass close to a house. You will come to the road.

CFL markings

Continue climbing the road and cross the village. At the Marian grotto, turn right and walk to the road on your right.

(9) Before the bus stop, turn right. The road becomes a path. Enter the woods. At the crossroads, continue to the right. The path follows the contour line. Walk for just under 1 km.

(10) Descend to the right along the winding path and return to another path, which you follow to the left.
Climb up and pass through a clearing with a view of Merkholtz on the opposite slope. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead.

(11) Enter the Nature Reserve and climb uphill. Once again, enjoy another view of Merkholtz. Enter the woods again. Walk until you reach a path on your right.

(12) Turn right and descend along the winding path. At the fork, turn left. At the next fork, continue to the right and at the intersection, keep to your left. Ignore the path on your right (not shown on the map). Exit the woods and walk to an intersection.

(13) Continue to the right and walk to the road. Turn left onto the road. Change of markings.

White Wave on Blue Background markings

Walk carefully along the road until you reach a warehouse. Turn right, walk past it and enter the woods. Further on, ignore the forest path on your right. Continue on the main forest path until you reach the entrance to a meadow. Look for a path on your left.

(14) Turn left onto the path. Come out from under the trees, walk along the meadow and return to a wide path. Ignore the hairpin bend on your left and continue straight ahead. On your left, you will see the path leading to the viewpoint over Schuttbourg Castle. Return to the path and continue downhill to the house.

(15) Continue straight ahead on the path. Discover asecond viewpoint overlooking the castle. Continue down the path to the road. Leave the marked trail.

No markings

Turn right onto the road and walk alongside the campsite. Go under the railway bridge and turn left at the fork. Keep left and, after the bend, turn left onto the downhill road. At La Clerve, turn right before the bridge and walk alongside the river to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk mainly through the woods.
A few viewpoints (rather limited) but a nice variety of beautiful landscapes.
The description and route are reliable, as are the distance and elevation.
It took us 3 hours and 44 minutes to complete the walk, out of a total of 4 hours and 40 minutes including breaks.
