From Niolon Station to the Port of Carry-le-Rouet, Côte Bleue, the Calanques

This walk is straightforward in terms of the route; simply follow the blue markings. As for difficulty, there is nothing to report; avoid doing it in wet weather as the stones can be slippery, wear suitable footwear and you’re all set.

Description of the walk

From Carry-le-Rouet station, take the TER (in April 2025 – €4.40 per person) to Niolon station.

(S) On leaving Niolon station, take the road to the left, follow the path marked in blue and occasionally in white and red. You will arrive at the Calanque du Jonquier.

(1) Continue along the path to Calanque de l’Érevine.

(2) Go under the railway line, keep to the right to avoid the steep climb on the left, then take the second path on the left and follow the railway line. The path then returns to the coast at Cap Méjean (viewpoint).

(3) Continue along the path to Grand Méjean.

(4) Follow the tarmac road to Les Figuières.

(5) Turn left onto Allée de la Falaise for a short detour via Calanque des Figuières, then head back up Allée du Port to Chemin de Méjean.

(6) Continue left before the railway line for 150 m.

(7) Turn left to rejoin the path and continue to La Redonne.

(8) Take the steps and head to the Port de la Redonne.

(9) The village is steep, very steep, with constant ups and downs. Walk along the harbour

(10) Turn left onto the Chemin du Prebaire, then take the Chemin de la Redonne, the Chemin de la Madrague, then left onto the Chemin de la Calanque du Puits.

(11) You might want to dip your feet in the Calanque des Eaux Salées, then head back up the hundreds of steps and walk along the railway line.

(12) Turn left onto the path, then right onto Chemin des Eaux Salées. Entering Le Rouet marks the end of the calanques; follow the blue markings to Calanque du Cap Rousset.

(13) Head left along Avenue Gérard Montus and arrive at the Port of Carrry-le-Rouet (E).

I did this today with my 13-year-old son, walking from Carry to Niolon:
The section up to Méjean is quite pleasant despite the steep climbs.
But after that section, we found it very tough going despite our good kit and fitness: the path often becomes narrow and rocky: we spent most of the time watching where we put our feet: to negotiate the ‘steps’, to get over the numerous rocks (some of which were very slippery), to manage passing other walkers (some of whom were carrying baby carriers and young children, or had dogs on leads, etc.),
All this with a constant climb: as a result, we only managed to look at the scenery four or five times; the rest of the time it was “we have to keep moving, being careful”.

In short, it’s often quite technical, sometimes narrow, with quite a bit of elevation gain.

Hiking boots are indeed highly recommended.

We did it the other way round, taking the train from Niolon to Carry and back along the route. I agree with Didier Rando's opinion that there is little of interest between Méjan and Carry, but the section between Niolon and Méjan is magnificent.
The elevation gain was slightly underestimated. I was closer to 710 metres.
PLEASE NOTE: work is scheduled to take place between 3 November 2025 and 13 February 2026 between Niolon and Calanque d'Erevine. During this period, the trail will be closed and strictly off-limits to visitors. Please check for updates. As of 8 November 2025, no work is planned.

Thank you Lolochaz for the track.

The main interest of this hike is in the first 6 kilometres from Niolon, roughly up to Méjean. After that, it's mainly urban and tarmac, with hundreds of steps to climb up or down. It's not enjoyable and there's no cultural or scenic interest.
I recommend going as far as Méjean and then returning (if you left your car in Niolon, of course) or taking the train at Ensues-La Redonne.

Top! Easy to follow, with stops for swimming in three different coves, not very busy, especially on the first few kilometres. When we arrived at Carry le Rouet, we had a booking for a short boat trip in the opposite direction towards Marseille! It gave us a different view but, to be honest, the coves are better seen from the walk than from the boat!
