Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the end of Ibon de los Baños (northern tip of the lake).

(S/E) Cross the bridge over the Rio Caldarès and turn right (north-east).

(1) At the next bridge, turn left onto theGR®11and follow the river up the right bank. Some exposed sections are equipped with handrails but are not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.

(2) Leave theGR®11temporarily to cross a footbridge over the river and switch to the left bank. Continue climbing and you will see waterfalls.

(3) Return to the left bank of the river and rejoin theGR®11.

(4) Begin a fairly steep climb where the stones are in poor condition due to rockfalls (watch your ankles).

(5) Begin the climb along switchbacks that are quite steep in places, facing the upper waterfalls. Reach Ibon de Bachimana Inferior.

(6) Cross a metal footbridge and go round the lake to the right. Note the Bachimana Refuge.

(7) Turn left to take a large footbridge perched atop the dam between Ibon Bajo and the Embalse de Bachimana. Pass between the two lakes and join theGR®11.

(8) Turn right towards Ibon Azul Inferior, following the Embalse de Bachimana Alto: a magnificent and spectacular sight. Further on, after crossing a torrent, the path turns left and heads west to reach Ibon Azul Inferior via an easy climb.

(9) The return journey follows the path back in the opposite direction to Ibon de Los Banos (S/E).

A very beautiful hike in good weather, but quite challenging in the middle of the rocks. Magnificent views of the lakes and waterfalls all along the route.

An easy, signposted route to the Bachimana refuge. From there, starting at the large Bachimana lake, and given that it is late May with snow still on the trail and a steep slope leading down to the lake, walking poles are required and caution is advised.

A very beautiful but very demanding hike. The path is crossed by streams (at this time of year) so it is very slippery. Always watch your step as there are lots of boulders and steps. There are three sections with cables, which are not mentioned in the description or the reviews. Above all, do not take the second footbridge as mentioned in the description (points 7 and 8) – it is closed to pedestrians. From the refuge, return to point 6 and take the GR11. There is a significant elevation gain, and I didn’t go as far as the second lake because the stream was impassable without taking off my shoes! A hike for experienced walkers.

The GR 11 is very well signposted, and you can follow it easily when there’s no snow. We came across snow after the first lake, and many hikers were turning back. We carried on regardless, without taking any unnecessary risks, and found the lake frozen over – ‘azul’ indeed! Magnificent! And we were almost alone in the world. This is also the route to the Pics d’Enfer in summer. The walk to the waterfalls at the start is well worth the effort – what a sight to behold in this season!

A lovely walk, though a bit challenging for those who aren’t fit or properly equipped.
