From Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to the Hermitage of Saint-Gens

A circular route on sometimes demanding terrain, starting from the ridges above Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and ending at the Hermitage of Saint-Gens.
Crossing wild valleys and the Vallon de Valescure (arch and karstic cave). Beautiful panoramic views of the Vaucluse mountains and Mont Ventoux.

Description of the walk

Access: park in the car park at the exit of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, on the edge of the D24 (Route de Cavaillon), 250 metres after the bridge in the centre of the village. Paid parking during the season after 9 a.m. (€4).

(S/E) From the car park, turn left onto the D24 towards the centre of the village.
Cross the bridge with its water wheel, then turn right to walk up the Sorgue.
Pass all the shop/restaurant fronts and the Resistance Museum and continue along a paved path to the resurgence. Towards the end, the ground is worn and may be slippery in places.

(1) When you reach the resurgence, go through the wooden barrier to stand in front of the spring.
Take the path on the right, marked with a small blue sign on the rock. The single track climbs up the cliff side above the Sorgue.
The vegetation is quite dense in places. Continue until you reach the ruins of the Château des Évêques de Cavaillon. The blue markings are very discreet.

(2) In front of the castle ruins, continue left around the hairpin bend. After a few metres, ignore the path on the right that leads back down. Continue on the path, which remains fairly wide (facing south).
On the flat section, just before the track descends again, look for a cairn and the blue markings that indicate the start of a small path on the left that climbs steeply.

(3) Take this path and head towards the rocky outcrop. Follow the trail and go around the cliffs on the right above the Vallon de la Fontaine de l'Oule (wide track visible on the right below). Blue markings.
Continue along this trail until it comes close to the cliff. Turn left to find a passage in the cliff.

(4) At the foot of the route, you will see blue markings. You will need to climb about 15 metres vertically using steps carved into the rock.
The first ledge leads to a rock shelter, then a final series of steps without ropes leads to the top of the ridge.

Once at the top, turn left to reach the ruins of a dry stone chapel. View from above, 230 metres above the resurgence.
Retrace your steps and continue straight ahead, climbing this ridge (north-east) following the cairns and blue markings (partially faded in places). The vegetation is fairly low, consisting mainly of small box trees and holm oaks.

Be careful, as there are several paths that are more or less marked on the ground, which can cause confusion about which route to follow.
Stay as close as possible to the ridge line (north-northeast) or follow the blue markings if they are visible. A large cairn marks the summit.
The ridge line continues for about 3.5km and then the path turns north-east and then east. At this point, the vegetation becomes denser and is often cut into boxwood bushes 3m high. There are no markings.

(5) At the intersection on the boxwood path, continue to the left. The track is clearer here. There are no markings.

(6) After 350 metres, leave the path on the left (leading to the Mourre de la Belle Étoile telecoms tower) and take the track on the right for 300 metres to rejoin a carriage road. There are no markings.

(7) At the end of the track, turn left and then immediately right. Continue along this wide track on flat ground for about 700 metres.

(8) At the "Plaine Est" sign, continue left towards La Pouraque on the wide track. This track is shared bythe GR®6/GR®97and theGRP® Sentier Historique du Mur de la Peste.
At the first intersection (where there is an underground fire hydrant), turn right onto the wide track (follow the MV110 and MV12 fire track signs). Stay on theGRP® Sentier Historique du Mur de la Peste.

(9) At the "Croix du Jas d'Esprit" sign, turn left towards Venasque, following the yellow markings. Old yellow/red markings, which are partially faded, are also present in some places.
Enter the Combe Mayaud, which is rather wild and rocky (almost entirely downhill).

(10) At the foot of the combe, facing the meadow, continue on the path to the right which runs alongside a fence and then orchards.
Yellow markings.
You will come out onto the tarmac road (Chemin de la Vachère) and continue to the right. Yellow markings.

(11) At the "Carroufra" sign, turn left towards Saint-Gens, then immediately right to leave the tarmac road. You will find yourself on theGR®91, marked in white/red. Further on, take the tarmac road that goes uphill.

(12) On the flat section, leave the tarmac road by turning right, then immediately left, staying on theGR®91. Ignore all the small paths you come across and stay on theGR®91.

(13) At the "Lou Planestèu" sign, turn left towards Saint-Gens. Stay on theGR®91.

(14) At the "Saint-Gens" sign, turn right to descend to the chapel. After visiting the Hermitage of Saint-Gens, turn around and head towards Combe de la Fontaine (go back up the tarmac road). Return to the "Saint-Gens" sign.

(14) Continue for about ten metres until you reach the "Combe de la Fontaine" sign, then turn left towards Rocher des Trois Luisants / Fontaine Miraculeuse.

(15) At the Miraculous Fountain (there is a small oratory above the spring), continue right on theGR®91. Go up the Combe de la Fontaine de Saint-Gens.

(16) At the sign for "Rocher des Trois Luisants", turn right towards Le Beaucet. Follow the yellow markings.
Go down the path, cross the wide track (Piste du Rocher) and continue straight ahead downhill.

(17) At the "Bourguigne" sign, continue left towards Saumane-de-Vaucluse on theGRP® Tour des Monts du Vaucluse. Yellow/red markings.
You will come out onto a wide track suitable for vehicles. Continue left until you reach the junction of the tracks.
Take the left-hand track at the hairpin bend downhill, following the "MV16" fire track sign. No markings.

(18) At the bottom of the descent, at the first hairpin bend, take the small path on the right that descends into the valley through the vegetation. You will find yourself on a small single track. No markings.
On this single track, ignore any small paths you may encounter. Continue straight ahead, heading mainly south until you come to a wide track.

(19) When you reach the track, turn left to go back up it. There are no markings.
After 250m, look for a path on the right that climbs steeply. Take this path until you reach the fire track (Piste des Fayardes).
On this track, continue to the left (the terrain descends) then turn right onto the path which climbs again.

(20) At the "Mourre Pelé" sign, turn left towards Saint-Gens.GR®91, white/red markings.
The path climbs up through terrain that is quite rough in places. Reach the summit at the watchtower.

(21) At the watchtower, turn right, staying at the edge of the vegetation. Look for a south-facing path that runs along the ridges. There are intermittent blue markings.

(22) At a small fork, continue left on the path that descends steeply. Blue markings also lead off to the right, but do not follow them.
Descend the path to reach the Vallon de Valescure. You will come out at the top of the valley on a scree slope. Pass in front of the arch. Continue descending; a more passable track will appear.

(23) On the descent, look for a small cairn painted with the word "karstic cave" in blue. Turn left and climb steeply up the small gravel pit to reach the entrance to the karstic cave. Walk around it (narrow cave) and descend back onto the track. Continue the descent.
At the edge of a clearing, turn right to reach the Valescure farm.

(24) When you reach the Valescure farm, continue left on the track.GR®91, white/red markings. Descend via this path until you pass close to a wide track.

(25) Just before crossing the wide track (fire access), bear slightly left. Stay on theGR®91, marked white/red.

(26) At the "Les Cabanes" sign, turn left towards Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Yellow/red and white/red markings.

(27) At the "La Verière" sign near the drystone shelter, follow Fontaine-de-Vaucluse on the path that descends. On the descent, pass several drystone shelters.
You will come out onto a small tarmac road. Continue straight ahead, continuing downhill to reach Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
Cross Chemin des Beaumes Rouges until you reach the path leading to the chasm. Turn right towards the centre of the village.

Then go up Avenue Petrarque on the left, crossing the Sorgue again to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

This route is best enjoyed in dry weather.

The terrain is uneven for most of the route, with some more or less technical descents.

!! Warning:!! The steep passage through the cliff to reach the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse ridge is exposed: it is only suitable for people who are not prone to vertigo. There are no safety features or aids to help you climb.

Between late February and late March, the Sorgue river may overflow; in this case, start directly from the car park. Turn left onto the D24 and after 150 metres you will find a stone street that climbs to the right.
Follow it as it winds and climbs uphill, marked by signs for "Château".
Once you reach the Château des Évêques de Cavaillon, follow the directions from the point (2).

Parking is paid during the season (€4, be aware that it may be very busy depending on the time of arrival).

Hello
Firstly, access to the Fontaine du Vaucluse is prohibited, so you must join the route at point 3 via the D100A and turn left at the start of a track with a car park.
Next, the stairway is a little difficult as the cable is thin and stops before the end.
Therefore, this route is not recommended for everyone, as it is quite challenging.

Hike starting from the car park (free) at Fond de l'Oule on the Lagnes road.
The only real difficulty is the vertical passage at point 4. The first flight of steps is secured by a small cable, but the second, which is slightly wider, is not.
The section between points 16 and 21 is not particularly interesting. At point 16, you can take the GR 91 on the left to reach point 21, reducing the distance by almost 4km.

Trail running training route completed in 4 hours 50 minutes, including numerous stops to check the route on the map and the description. Not a particularly difficult circular route, apart from the cliff section at point 4. Otherwise, beautiful single tracks, beautiful views, nothing to complain about.

First attempt at this hike in March 2018.
But, not realising that the Sorgue river was preventing us from continuing towards the castle ruins, we climbed up the right side of the mountain through the heath for three hours...
We were still able to reach the Hermitage. On the way back, we took the wrong track and ended up in La Roque-Sur-Pennes. We turned back to find the right track before climbing up to the watchtower.
For today's hike, I decided to start from the castle ruins to avoid another ordeal!
The path leading to the Crête de Fontaine de Vaucluse is marked in blue, but as you approach the cliff, there are no signs indicating the direction, as the blue markings are at the start of the path that descends to the right.
So I continued towards the cliff, following a path at the start. Then I climbed up on instinct, but didn't see any steps carved into the rock, and didn't really feel that the passage was exposed...
Once on the ridge, I found green markings, which later turned blue. I lost the path several times, but quickly found it again each time. After the large cairn, I continued along the ridges.
Then things got complicated... One signpost indicated "Plaine" and another was nearby, but had no name on it. There was a sign indicating La Pouraque. But I never found this first intersection with a buried cistern... I continued to an intersection where the MV 110 sign was indicated. I took a track that descended for a good 3 kilometres where the signs mentioned Venasque. Then at one point, I found signs indicating Saint-Gens. Finally, I found the "Carouffra" sign...
It took me 4 hours and 45 minutes to get from Fontaine to L'Ermitage... I took a 25-minute break to eat, then set off again to continue my hike. I followed the directions carefully and arrived at Mourre Pelé at 3:15 p.m. As the mist was returning and I didn't want to be caught out by nightfall, I didn't climb up to the watchtower (which I had seen in 2018) and instead returned directly to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse via the Vallescure farm.
In the end: 25 km, 1,100 metres of elevation gain for a total of 8 hours of hiking...
Definitely worth doing again in spring when the days are longer...!
PERSONAL OPINION: The classification as "Very difficult" seems inappropriate to me... "Difficult" would be the correct term... Although...!

A challenging and magnificent hike. A must if you are physically fit and enjoy exertion. Superb views and very varied vegetation.
Between points 3 and 4, the blue markings are more or less covered by green markings.
Many thanks to kcnarf for this superb hike.
See you there!

Thank you for these details
The author does indeed warn hikers who are prone to vertigo to be careful when crossing the steep section of the cliff.
As for the resurgence, it's good to know, but you have to be there to see it.
JODIDO: keep us posted the next time you do this hike.
dadie: thank you for your appreciation of the site, we appreciate it.

I asked a friend who had already done this hike why I couldn't find the path to the resurgence. Quite simply because there was water, as the resurgence was overflowing.
So, I'm planning to do it again to take the steps carved into the rock to reach the plateau and enjoy the view, which must be magnificent!

I did this hike with my daughter and we loved it.
The guidance is very well done and precise. You just have to follow it carefully. It is also important to read the additional comments, as they are valuable, particularly for accessing the castle via the resurgence, which is impossible when the fountain is overflowing, but which can be reached via the village, which is what we did.
Do not underestimate the comment about the steps carved into the rock to access the fountain ridge. I am afraid of heights and this passage, which is not at all secure, caused me problems, especially the first part of the steps. However, once at the top, I must admit that it is worth it. The view is magnificent. A few steep climbs and descents make this a fairly challenging and very natural route (no villages to cross except at the start in Fontaine de Vaucluse).
We left Fontaine de Vaucluse at 9 a.m. and, despite a return trip to the resurgence and a few hesitations along the way, we completed the hike in 6.5 hours, which was good training for trail running.
This is the first time I've used a hike posted on Visorando and I can only recommend it...

I completed my first "Very Difficult" hike suggested by the Visorando website on 18 March 2018.
The weather was a bit chilly, with wind at higher altitudes, but the sun was shining intermittently.
Accompanied by a friend, we left the car park at around 7:30 a.m.
The entrance to the site is theoretically closed and off-limits to the public due to rock slides.
But since the fence was down, we continued on the trail.
Once we reached the resurgence, we didn't see a path on the right; the only visible option was to climb up on the left.
We didn't see the ruins of the castle and chapel. I therefore conclude that we didn't take the right path. We climbed for two hours, getting lost from time to time because the blue markings were few and far between. We arrived at the "Les Trois Luisants" sign and descended to the Hermitage of Saint-Gens where we took a well-deserved break to have a bite to eat. We then climbed back up towards Les Trois Luisants, but unfortunately took the wrong trail, the MV 15 instead of the MV 16, which took us back down to the "Le Haut Du Fraischamps" sign. We really didn't know where we were. We took a trail marked "Saumane" and found the intersection of the MV15 and MV16 trails.
From there, we followed the signs to the watchtower (La Vigie) and descended through the Vallon de Vallescure. We quickly found a flat path that took us back to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
So I think we missed part of this hike, but I can't understand how you can pass the castle ruins when starting from the resurgence. Perhaps we didn't study the terrain properly, and since we didn't have an IGN map, we couldn't get a clear idea of the route.
In the end, we still had a great physical hike with about 1,200 metres of elevation gain, which took us 9½ hours.

At the location mentioned in (4), there are sometimes ropes, but it is impossible to know how long they have been there or what condition they are in. The Fontaines town hall tends to remove them to avoid the municipality being held liable. When I take groups there, I put up my own handrail the day before and take it down at the end of the day. There are good permanent anchor points.
The difficulty can be avoided by continuing to follow the blue markers at the bottom of the cliff, then a line of cairns to the ridge. It is less interesting than the passage through the cliff, but still a very pretty path.
