Hello,
I had been dreaming of visiting the castle (or what remains of it). We live right next door but had never had the time to go up there. In short, we are always looking for walks that are not too difficult for our guests (bed and breakfast/lodge).
The description seemed easy. It was difficult to find where it started! Once we found it, (when you're facing the porch (stone archway), take the stairs on the right. It's a steep climb and at one point you wonder if you've taken a wrong turn!
No markings, no landmarks...we moved to the right, then to the left, and climbed over rocks. Sometimes there were steps carved into the rock, so we kept going. Then we came to an iron ladder to climb over a "wall". The rungs were so far apart that you needed to have long legs and not be 1.5 metres tall like me! So we opted for the "wall" and my husband's help! Don't be afraid of heights because the slope is steep and somewhat dangerous! Avoid going back down the same way, ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN! We finally arrive at the castle ruins. A beautiful view (not of the chasm, not of the Sorgue...or did we miss a path?). After that, everything is as described: a beautiful walk through the undergrowth, the ruined drystone shelters and, above all, the splendid views of the rocks. It's a real treat. Finally, you arrive at a car park and walk a good 2 km to return to the centre of Fontaine de Vaucluse.
If you don't want to "run into a goat", it's best to avoid the acrobatic climb, park directly in the car park and walk there and back via the path to the castle. The views are sublime. Admittedly, it's longer, but the slope is gentle and there's no risk of a dangerous fall!
So, to conclude, we would not advise our customers to take the perilous climb up the stairs, but rather to walk there and back via the car park and the footpath.
