From Arure to Taguluché

We're discovering the wonderful landscapes of La Gomera, an island in the Canary archipelago 35km from Tenerife, which is unspoilt by tourism and a hiker's paradise.
A fairly challenging route from the village of Arure to Taguluche, 800m below. The descent is steep, but the scenery is breathtaking.
A very mineral landscape, then a final descent through tiered gardens to finish on the lava paths by the sea.

Description of the walk

Start: Leave from the village of Arure, leaving the car in front of the restaurant (small car park).

(S/E) Descend to cross the village on the main road and reach a hairpin bend.

(1) Turn right (GR®132), follow the path for a hundred metres or so, then turn right to pass under an aqueduct. Then reach a magnificent viewpoint overlooking the valley. At this point, 800m below, you'll spot the village of Taguluché, the destination of your hike. Walk past the viewpoint and continue along the path opposite to reach the chapel.

(2) 50m after the small chapel, turn left and leave the GR®132 to continue straight ahead. Follow the path (fairly steep lava pebble steps) until you come to a path leading to some houses.

(3) Turn right and follow the path. At the 3rd hairpin bend, take a path to the left which passes the terrace of a house. Continue until you reach the road (in a hairpin bend) and take the path immediately to your left. Follow it downhill through several terraced gardens, ending up at the end of a road.

(4) Go straight ahead, then follow the track to the right until you reach a road on the left. Follow this road to the end.

(5) Take the downhill path opposite. Pass between houses, continuing towards the coast. If you're brave enough, you can go down to the sea, although there's no beach for swimming.

(6) Return along the same path.

(5) Go back up the road for about 40 m and take the path on the right. Cross a group of houses and continue straight on uphill. After several zig-zags, leave a track on the left and continue uphill. Reach a cultivated area with a few palm trees.

(7) Go to the left side of the ravine and climb to the top of the cliff (south-west direction). Continue along this path until you reach the junction with the GR®132 coming from the right.

(8). Take it to the left, it's a forest track that we'll follow to the junction with our original road, which we'll find near the aqueduct.

(1) At the road, continue left uphill to reach the start (S/E).

A descent for mountaineers with sure feet and no fear of heights, exposed at times and very steep.
Magnificent route.

A lovely walk on the south-western part of the island with beautiful views of Taguluche. The descent along the path indicated, part 2, is very steep and currently in a very poor state of repair as it is not maintained, especially at the springs which make the stones very slippery with brambles. It's better to go via the Lomo del Carretón from the Hermitage del Santo, which is an absolute beauty.

We didn't make it all the way as it was very, very hot that day... and this hike is really steep! But it's a beautiful hike. La Gomera is a magnificent island and Valle Gran Rey a very pleasant place to stay and hike. This is a nice one and we were able to do it without taking the car, because of course La Gomera is steep and there are always quite a few cars and bends to get to the start of the hikes.
Here's a short film of our holidays and hikes in 2017, to whet your appetite for discovering these magnificent islands!
