In Django’s footsteps in Samois-sur-Seine

A walk to discover the charming village of Samois-sur-Seine, nestled between the Forest of Fontainebleau and the River Seine. This is the village where Django Reinhardt, the famous guitarist and creator of ‘gypsy jazz’, lived and died. Along the way, you can admire, along the banks of the Seine, a few “affolantes” – villas built by wealthy Parisians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the car park and head to the right towards the banks of the Seine. Turn left onto the towpath. Walk past the moored barges. Continue along this wide path for just over a kilometre.

(1) The towpath then turns into a footpath for about 700 metres, leading to a wide open space. Continue along the banks of the Seine. You’ll soon reach the forest again. At the first junction, turn left onto the GR®2 (marked with red and white signs).

(2) After a few dozen metres, you’ll see a gigantic tree on the right, classified as ‘remarkable’ by the ONF (blue dot on the trunk). Follow the path marked in white and red (GR®2), cross the first junction and continue to the Bardeau crossroads.

(3) Carry on straight ahead along the GR®2 until you reach a barrier restricting vehicle traffic.

(4) Leave the GR®2 by turning right onto the Chemin des Rousseaux. At the next junction, turn right to reach the Chemin des Essarts after 120 m. Turn left. When you reach a tarmac road, turn right onto it; after about 150 m, cross the road (watch out for traffic!) and turn left onto the Chemin de la Mare Maguet.

(5) Continue straight on, ignoring the paths branching off to the right and left. At the end of the path, turn right onto the Chemin du Champ de Mars. At the next junction, take the track on the left and follow it to the D137.

(6) Cross the road. After about a hundred metres, turn left onto Chemin Denecourt no. 15 (blue markings). Follow this path, which winds between large rocks and, after a climb, leads to the Tour de Samois.

(7) Cross the esplanade and follow the blue markings again. The path descends through the rocks to a T-junction. Turn right to reach a ruined building (the Samois spring water pavilion).

(8) Take the path leading down to the left, continuing to follow the blue markings until you reach the junction with a tarmac road (Avenue du Général Leclerc).

(9) Turn left, and after 30 metres cross the road to join the “Montée de Thérouane”. Go down the steps to reach the banks of the Seine. Leave the blue markings and rejoin the GR®2. Take Quai Franklin Roosevelt on the left. Admire the “affolantes” on your left. After 400 m, the road splits into two, flanking a small square where there is a statue of Django Reinhardt.

(10) Continue along the GR®2, keep to the right, and cross the bridge leading to Île du Berceau. At the end of the island, cross the bridge, then take the first street on the left (Rue du Bas Samois). Immediately on the left is the house where the famous guitarist lived. The street soon becomes steep; climb up to the wash house on the left.

(11) Leave the GR®2 and take the Chemin des Berceaux opposite the washhouse, then turn right onto Rue du Petit Pont. At the end of this street, turn left, then take the second right (Rue du Grenier à Sel). After a few dozen metres, turn right onto Rue des Halles, which leads to the centre of the village. Opposite the town hall, take Rue Gambetta on the left, then the second on the left: Rue Saint-Hilaire.

(12) After about a hundred metres, turn right and walk alongside the Church of Saint-Hilaire Saint-Loup, then turn left, and immediately right to join the path behind the church. Follow it to Boulevard Aristide Briand, turn right and, 80 metres further on, take Rue des Grilles on the right. At the end of the street, turn right onto Chemin du Mont Fleuri, which takes you back to the starting point (S/E).
