In the Alaric Mountains around Miramont

Superb panoramic views with, on clear days, a view of the Pyrenees mountains as a bonus.

Description of the walk

From Carcassonne, head towards Narbonne. At the entrance to Trèbes, before the railway bridge, turn right onto the D3 towards Lagrasse. Drive through Fontiès-d'Aude and continue to Monze. In the centre of the village, take a road on the left (D8008) signposted as a pastoral tourist farm road. This road is passable but narrow. Continue for about 3km. At a hairpin bend on the left, continue for another 1km until you reach a forest track on the right. Park on the central reservation.
See Note in the Practical Information section for the return journey.

Red and white markings for theGR®36variant and theGR®36.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs to the left, south-east, following the markings for theGR®36variant for about 1300m. At the junction with a track, turn left.

(1) At the fork, continue to the left. The path climbs and makes an S-bend, then turns right onto the ridge at an altitude of 507m (view of the Aude plain). Further on, the path makes a half-circular loop to the right.

(2) Leave theGR®36variant and take the narrow path opposite for 300 metres.

(3) At the fork, descend to the left along a steep path for about 400m. This is the most technical section and should be negotiated with caution by inexperienced hikers.

(4) When you reach a tarmaced plateau, take the forest path that starts on the left, climbing slightly, this time following theGR®36markings. Continue along this path until you see the ruins of Miramont Castle below on the right.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left onto theGR®36variant and follow the D8008 to the finish (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 371 m - Starting point
  2. 1 : km 1.35 - alt. 454 m - Turn left at the fork.
  3. 2 : km 2.65 - alt. 484 m - End of GR36 variant, path opposite
  4. 3 : km 2.94 - alt. 465 m - On the left, steep path
  5. 4 : km 3.22 - alt. 390 m - Forest path on the left via GR36
  6. 5 : km 4.94 - alt. 349 m - Turn left onto the D8008.
  7. S/E : km 5.39 - alt. 371 m - Starting point

Notes

(3) Walking shoes are not compulsory but are strongly recommended.
In sunny weather, a hat and water are not superfluous.

Note: if you do not wish to return via Monze, you can descend to (5) and turn left to reach the village of Barbaira on the D6113. Please note that the road is narrow here too, but the scenery is very pleasant.

As the author, I would like to respond to Marie Pierre Chanoine, as she is the first person who did not enjoy this hike.
Regarding the start of the route, I believe that access to it is clearly described, even though the location is not indicated by a sign.
As for the markings, this route does not have its own markings, and the ones you see belong to other routes. But according to the description, all the other hikers who left comments rated it "Very good".
As for the IGN map, if it is not included in my description, it is because VISORANDO provides it in the header of the file. Similarly, the GPS coordinates of the starting point are also provided by VISORANDO.
I am sorry that you were not satisfied with my work. I hope that your negative comment will not discourage future walkers, who will be able to enjoy the magnificent views that can be discovered along this route without any major difficulties.
No hard feelings.

Hello,
The starting point of the hike was not specified. The first two kilometres are marked with yellow PR signs, with no trace of the GR 36. GPS notifications are useless if you are not equipped.
The IGN map number is not specified.

The landscape is magnificent, but the hike was not completed.

Hello,
A superb little hike that can be done at a leisurely pace in 1 hour 40 minutes (in our case with a 6-year-old child).
Very beautiful views.
Before arriving, you can take a detour to the ruins of Miramont Castle, 600 metres there and back. Beautiful panorama, picnic tables.

It's rare to find such an interesting short hike. Beautiful panoramic views as it's very open and there's a wide variety of vegetation on the first half of the route. More traditional but pleasant and very natural, plus the ruins of Miramont Castle on the last 2 km.
Be careful with the starting point: we clicked on "go to the start" on the Visorando app and foolishly followed the GPS. Maps took us down a grassy path that was barely passable by car and ended at a gate. We had to turn back. In short, it's better to follow the directions given to get there, and then there will be no problems.

This hike is accessible to all and provides access to the magnificent landscapes of the Corbières and beyond: the clear weather allowed us to admire the Pyrenees mountain range! I highly recommend it!
