In the Mortavieille valley at the start of Bonnenuit

This is a short hike with little elevation gain in the barren environment around the Col du Galibier, just for the pleasure of walking along a pretty valley and lazing around for a few hours in the afternoon in absolute calm. Rejuvenation guaranteed.

Description of the walk

Coming from Valloire towards the Col du Galibier, pass the village of Bonnenuit.
After crossing the Bonnenuit stream, continue for another 600 or 700 metres until you reach the southern entrance to the village.
Park in the car park on the left-hand side of the road as you go uphill.

(S/E) Continue up the road for about 100 metres.

(1) Turn right onto the track that descends into the Valloirette valley to the Valloirette river.

(2) Cross the river via a beautiful bridge and continue along the track that descends the left bank into the valley with its beautiful V-shaped slopes, at the bottom of which flows the Lauzette torrent.

(3) After skirting an alluvial plain, the track becomes a path as it clings to the left bank.
After climbing quite high up the rocky slope, the path approaches the left bank of a tributary of the Lauzette, the Torrent du Goléon, and reaches a pastoral area where many ruins remain.

(4) Pass the ruins of huts and sheepfolds and continue along the Goléon.

(5) Cross the Goléon on a beautiful footbridge with high balustrades.
Note: this footbridge may one day be swept away by the torrent during a major flood, as everything is constantly shifting in the mountains. Continue towards the top of the hamlet of Lauzette.

(6) The hamlet of Lauzette is slightly below on the left. Leave the path that branches off to the right towards the Goléon valley and continue south until you reach the Torrent de la Lauzette.

(6) After fording the Torrent de la Lauzette, you will find yourself in a very pleasant mountain pasture, ideal for a picnic or even a nice nap.

(7) Return by the same route you came, back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no particular difficulties on this round trip with a modest elevation gain. However, be sure to wear good shoes as there are many rocky sections. Walking sticks can also be useful.
In summer, it can get very hot in this valley, which is mostly north-south facing and exposed to the sun with no shade for most of the day. There are no trees to provide shade for a break.
There is no drinking water along the route, but there are numerous streams where you can cool off, if not drink. Personally, we tend to wet our hats whenever we come across a stream.

Worth a visit

There are three possible extensions to this walk:
- the Goléon valley, taking the path at the point (6) that leads away from the hamlet of Lauzette and towards a superb mineral cirque.
- The Vallon du Fond, continuing upstream along the Lauzette torrent.
- The Galibier gypsum caves, which can be reached by continuing our route towards Plan Nicolas and going up the Fontaine Lombarde stream. Having already seen this type of formation, we preferred to visit them later, approaching them from the Galibier road via Colomban Noir. From the hairpin bends of the pass, you can already enjoy beautiful views of these gypsum caves.

A peaceful hike up the valley. Very few people, so it's very quiet after some much busier hikes in the Cerces Massif.
Thanks to the author for this hike!

The yellow signs indicate Combe du Claret, Vallon du Goléon and La Lauzette.

Ah, you mean the yellow signs at the entrance to the track that leaves the road towards the valley?
If I remember correctly, those signs weren't there when I did this hike.
If you remember exactly what is written on the sign for the walk, I could add this information to my guide.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, absolutely. I was just pointing out that the signs don't mention the Mortavieille valley; you need to follow the Goléon valley or the Claret valley if you don't have a map

@User 11886534, did you look at the IGN map? The Lauzette Valley, which this entire hike follows, is called "Combe de Mortavieille"; that is a fact. It's not surprising that the shepherd you met didn't know this name; he may know the place by another name.

A very pleasant, easy hike with a gentle, steady climb through the valley, refreshing mountain pastures and streams, beautiful scenery and a quiet route, all of which contribute to the serenity of the place. However, there were no signs for Mortavieille (even the shepherd didn't know the name), so we followed the Goléon valley.

Instead of turning back, we continued on and came out on the road to the pass. It is possible to descend, marked in yellow, towards the chalets (cheese sold in season). It's a shame that there isn't a path winding through the valley (still possible to see), so we followed the marked yellow path, which took us on a long circular loop around the western flank before we could descend to Plan Lachat... from there, a good marked path follows the stream and takes you back to Bonnenuit. Allow 14-15 km...

@maumorando21 You are right to remind us that we should never approach herds in the mountains. This applies to both sheep and cows: cows generally seem very peaceful, but they can react unexpectedly, especially when they are with their calves. So if you have children, be careful not to let them be charmed by these lovely animals. You must be discreet and very respectful towards them.

Hike completed in good weather conditions.
Herd of sheep on the route with sheepdogs. Stay on the path, do not approach the sheep and talk to the sheepdog to appease it. Everything went well.
The footbridge over the Goléon no longer has railings.
Enjoy your hike.

A beautiful hike without too much elevation gain in a quiet, uncrowded area. Continue on to reach the Col du Galibier road. The round trip is very pleasant. A good training walk before tackling the magnificent walks in the region.

@cathyferrer thank you for your comment. It's an excellent idea to continue like this until you reach the Galibier road. We would have done so if we had had a way (a second vehicle) to get back to the starting point by road. Perhaps next time, we'll leave our bikes by the side of the road at the highest point.
Crossing the gypsum quarries must be interesting. Do you have any photos to post for this additional part of the route?

We extended our hike to Colombar Noir to reach the Galibier road, passing by the gypsum mountain at Les Gypsières.
A peaceful hike with few people and beautiful views at the foot of Galibier.
Thanks to the author.
