From Estaing to Massip on the Way of St James

This is a stage of the Way of St James starting from the pretty village of Estaing. I recommend visiting this magnificent village and its castle. You can also enjoy a drink by the Lot river. A plaque in memory of President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing can be found at the entrance to the village. This stage is moderately difficult with a lot of road and some elevation gain, so bring something to drink and protection from the sun.

Description of the walk

There are several parking options. You can either leave your vehicle in the square, but be careful on market days, or park behind the communal lodge. The hike follows the GR®65 Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle trail.

(S) To start the trail, take the Estaing bridge, a superb bridge over the Lot with magnificent views. Follow the road along the river.

(1) At the intersection, turn left and continue along the Lot on a beautiful shaded path.

(2) Cross the small bridge over the Ruisseau de Luzane. Continue to the right and then take the path on the left, which is a shortcut and avoids a dangerous stretch of road. Return to the road on the left.

(3) At the end of the hairpin bend, turn right and then quickly left to avoid dangerous sections and the road. You will rejoin the road at a place called Montégut.

(4) Turn left and follow the road for a few kilometres towards Riou-le-Prat and then La Bernarderie.

(5) Continue straight ahead along the road towards the village of Mas: be very careful, there is little traffic but vehicles drive fast. You will reach a crossroads.

(6) Continue straight ahead towards Le Mas and reach the hamlet, where you can refresh yourself (bar).

(7) Continue straight ahead, ignore a road on the left and continue to the junction with the access road to Le Brol.

(8) Turn left, ignore the road on the right leading to Castaillac and continue for about 400 m.

(9) Cross the road and finally turn left onto a path towards Massip.

(10) Cross the access road to La Boriette and take the well-marked path opposite towards Beauregard.

(11) Turn left to reach the hamlet of Massip, the final destination of this stage (E).
