Leave your vehicle in the hikers' car park in Montagny, in the commune of Arith.
Yellow markings
(S/E) At the far end of the car park, follow the sign for Montagny car park and head towards Granges du Crêt on a wide track suitable for vehicles. At the Granges du Crêt sign, leave the track and turn left onto a beautiful path towards Les Combrettes. Leave the accesses to the barns on your left and ignore a path on your left further on.
(1) Immediately afterwards, cross the track, continue climbing opposite and go straight ahead at the next intersection. Further on, a short detour to the left leads to a simple fountain. Ignore a few paths branching off to the left.
(2) Leave the path, which widens to resemble the bed of an intermittent stream, and turn onto a narrower path on the right (offset from the IGN trail). At the Les Combrettes marker, find theGR®®96and follow the direction of Pâturages de Lachat on the left.
Red and whiteGR®® markings
Go through a fence (with a gate) and then immediately turn left. Walk among the cows and horses.
(3) At the Pâturages de Lachat marker, turn right towards Refuge du Creux de Lachat. You will soon reach this marker and continue towards Creux de Lachat. Cross another fence (if the horses are gathered at the gate, it is better to pass under the electric wire rather than risk them rushing out of the enclosure when you open the gate).
(4) At the Creux de Lachat signpost, leave theGR®® and continue to the left towards Sous le Chalet.
Yellow markings
At the fork, keep left and arrive at the Sous le Chalet signpost.
No markings
Ignore the directions indicated and follow the path that branches off to the left. Further on, you will find yellow markings in the opposite direction and climb to the right. Higher up, the path runs along the cliff.
(5) A path branches off to the right, allowing you to reach a small viewpoint (view towards the west, Lac du Bourget) and return. Continue along the path and, after a steep climb, you will reach the second viewpoint (Les Pendants, view towards the west). Then a passageway leads into a meadow where you will find the yellow markings again.
Yellow markings
In the meadow, follow the fence on your right, guided by the numerous marker posts, to descend to the Les Pendants marker. Return to theGR®®.
Red and whiteGR®® markings
(6) Follow the direction of the orientation table, then take another passageway through the fence to cross into another meadow. After a steep climb, you will reach the viewpoint and its orientation table (view towards the west and south), then descend to the edge of the cliff and reach the Col de la Cochette marker.
(7) Follow the signs for Chalet de la Plate. Back among the cows, there are several gates to open and close. At the Fontaines Froides signpost, continue to follow the signs for Chalet de la Plate. The path passes below a small hill at the Vers les Sources signpost.
(8) Climb to the top for a beautiful 360° panorama, then return to the Vers les Sources marker. Turn left towards La Plate and further on, just after passing a gate, turn left. After another gate, pay attention to the markings and follow the fence on your left for a few metres before descending to the right.
(9) At the Pré Bouclier signpost, follow the direction of Chalet de la Plate, reach the La Plate signpost (the eponymous chalet is on the right), and leave theGR®® markings.
Yellow markings
(10) Follow the signs for Parking de Montagny. Pass several more fences.
(11) At the intersection with a path, follow it to the left and at the next fork, keep right.
(12) Near Chalet Prisset (on the left), at the intersection with a path, continue left and stay on this beautiful path to reach the Montagny car park (S/E).
