Crampiolo - Alpe de Veglia

This fifth stage crosses the Devero and Veglia Natural Parks. During the day, you will cross two more passes, the Scatta d'Orogna and the Passo di Valtendra. After the second pass, the landscape becomes more harmonious. A pretty little stream and a long passage through the woods accompany the descent to Alpe de Veglia. Alpe de Veglia is a group of small hamlets located close to each other at the bottom of a very steep valley. Major peaks such as Monte Leone (3,553 m) and Bortelhorn (3,194 m) surround these peaceful hamlets.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: From Binn to Simplon Pass

(S) FromLa Baïta, heading south-west, pass in front of the Agriturismo dell'Alpe Crampiolo and then the Ristorante Fizzi and follow the H98 trail that leads to Alpe Devero.

(1) Cross the mountain pasture and arrive at the Oratorio San Bertolomio.

Signposting: Sentiero H99 - Red-White-Red markings

(2) Turn right, follow the Rio Buscagna to the edge of the hamlet, follow the Sentiero H99 and arrive at the hamlet of Piedemonte.

(3) Stay on Sentiero H99, leave Piedemonte and begin the climb to Alpe de Buscagna.

(4) At Alpe de Buscagna, continue along the path to the left (H99), make an effort to reach the upper level, and rejoin the Rio Buscagna. After a short break until Curt-Vita, resume the ascent of Scatta d'Orogna, the highest point of the stage.

(5) Descend towards Lago d'Orogna and, after this short flat section, continue downhill to an intersection.

(6) Take the path on the left (still the H99), descend a little further until you reach the Rio Bondolero valley. Regain some energy to climb the Passo di Valtendra.

(7) Begin the long zigzag descent through the rocks, then a short stretch through the forest before returning to Pian du Scricc.

(8) Follow the Rio Frua, in a rather chaotic setting, and continue the descent to Alpe de Veglia.

(9) Turn left and easily reach Rifugio Citta di Arona, your accommodation for the night (E).
