Cookham Circular

Start : Cookham Railway Station (SL6 9BP) Grid ref. SU 884 844

(S/E) From the station forecourt go down the hill on the main road, passing a shop and café to the left. Cross the road opposite Cookham nursery school.

(1) At the road junction turn left on the public footpath along Poundfield Lane passing Anchor Court. Pass the gate and continue to a lane. Turn left and immediately right and right again at the public footpath sign. Go down the hill, through the gate.

(2) Bear right at the path junction. Keep to the right of the stream and go over Bridge. Keep ahead past the car park and picnic area along the edge of the green. Pass the Crown and carefully cross the main road into School Lane.

(3) Straight away turn right on the public footpath signed to Moor Hall and very soon turn left, now on the Green Way East. Keep ahead on this enclosed path which then veers to the right across a field. Keep to the Green Way East on the other side of the hedge with the Strand Water on the right.

(4) At the next junction :
- For the shorter walk, turn right over the bridge on the Green Way West, turn right again before next bridge and follow this route back to Cookham.

- For the longer walk, turn left on the Green Way East. Go through the gate onto Widbrook Common and keep to the public footpath on the right along the edge of the common. Keep ahead through the gate and over the bridge.

(5) Go through the second gate and follow the Green Way East along the edge of the quarry and Reservoir.

(6) At the junction with the cycleway turn left on the Green Way East ignoring the footpath on the right. Keep ahead across the corner of the field at the next path junction.

(7) Turn right along the cycleway and at the path junction turn right, now on the Green Way West, keeping beside the stream.

(8) Turn right on the Green Way West where indicated. At the next path junction turn left on the Green Way West.

(9) At the path junction either turn right over the bridge then at waypoint (4) left on the Green Way West and follow this route back to Cookham, or for a more direct way to the station keep ahead on a footpath, cross footbridge and go through the gate and bear left on enclosed path.

(10) On reaching the lane turn left along it then keep ahead on surfaced road. Turn right into Bass Mead then follow the path on the right leading to the main road.

(11) Cross carefully, turn left under the railway bridge then immediately right up steps on the public footpath between houses and the railway. The path soon opens out along the edge of a playing field.

Continue along the residential road to a more major road. Turn right, go through the station car park then turn right over the level crossing to reach the station entrance. (S/E)

Shorter version: For the shorter walk, turn right over the bridge on the Green Way West at the waypoint (4), turn right again before the next bridge and follow this route back to Cookham.

Terrain : A mostly level walk on good paths, much of it on the Green Way.

Stiles : No stiles.

Refreshments : Refreshment is available in picturesque Cookham village, once home to the artist Stanley Spencer.
