Start: Bourne End train station, Station Road, Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, (SL8 5QH). Grid. Ref. SU 8938 8722
(S/E) We start our walk at Bourne End train station. Exit the station and take a right (South) on A155 (Station Road). Go down (South) the A155 for 200 m and then turn right (West) on Camden Place. At the end of the road, you find a footpath on your right (North West), going behind the houses. Take this footpath.
After a few steps, the footpath splits into two. Stick to the one on your left heading towards the North West alongside the River Thames. The other footpath goes inland, so you know you are on the right path if the River Thames is on your left (South West). A few more steps and you arrive at a bridge. Walk South-West across the bridge.
(1) Once you get to the other side of the bridge, take right (North West) on the River Thames towpath. You are going in the right direction if the river is on your right-hand side. Follow the towpath heading North West and then bending to the West for 960 m.
(2) You arrive at a house (Ferry Cottage) where the path diverts from the river bank. A few steps after the path splits into 2. Take the path going towards the fields on your left (South West). After 210 m, you arrive at a junction. Turn left (South East) onto the footpath going in the field towards the hill. Walk across the crops for 290 m. You arrive at a pond hidden behind trees with a fence in front of it to prevent trespassing.
(3) Continue straight (South). You arrive at the bottom of the hill. Take the footpath going uphill on your right (South West). Follow this path for 790 m or so.
(4) Then the path splits into 2. Stick to the path on your left (South West). Please note that if you get it wrong it is not an issue as both paths lead to Gibraltar Lane in the end. When you get to Winter Hill road, take right (South West).
(5) A few 85 meters later, you arrive at the crossroad with Gibraltar Lane and Stone House Lane. Turn right (North West) onto Gibraltar Lane and walk down it for 90 m and you find a footpath going through the forest on your left. Take this footpath. After 60 m, the path splits into 2. Stick to the path on the right. Follow the path across the forest until you come out of the woodlands onto Gibraltar Lane.
(6) On your left see a house. Turn left (South-West) and walk in front of the house descending the hill (South West) on this path for 510 m. The path becomes a paved road after 360 m. When you get to the bottom of the hill, continue straight on Quarry Wood road. You know you are going in the correct direction if the River Thames is on your right-hand side. Continue on Quarry Wood Road for 410 m. At the intersection turn right (North West) onto Quarry Wood Road and walk on the side of the road for 1 Km. On your way, you walk under the A404.
(7) At the end of the road, turn right (North West) onto Bisham Road. Walk across Marlow Suspension Bridge and you arrive in Marlow. Continue straight after crossing the bridge and turn right (North East) onto The Causeway, a street leading to the Church. On the left-hand side of the Church Gate, you find an alleyway indicated by a signpost. Take this alleyway heading towards the East. Come out of the alleyway onto St Peter Street.
(8) Take right (South) onto St Peter Street and you find the entrance of another alleyway on your left (East) just after The Two Brewers pub. Follow the narrow and sinuous alleyway heading East, then North and finally North East. You come out of the alley onto Mill Road.
(9) Take a right (South-East-South) on Mill Road. After 110 m the road bends to the left (East) going parallel to the River Thames. Continue on Mill Road. After the crossroad with Marlow Mill, the road changes its name and becomes Gosmore Lane. Continue straight onto Gossmore Lane.
(10) After 130 m, you find a footpath on your right (South). Take this footpath leading to the bank of the River Thames. When you get to the river, follow the path turning left (South East) and following the river. You are on the Thames Path. Follow the Thames Path for 3.6 Km. The Thames Path is heading South East then, towards the North East and finally towards the South East.
(11) You are back at the bridge you crossed at the start (see waypoint(1)). This time do not cross over the bridge but continue straight (South East) and retrace your steps back to the train station. Follow the footpath and then turn left (East) onto Camden Place. At road junction with Station Road, turn left (North) onto Station Road. The train station is 200 m up (North) the road.
