Description of the walk

Start : Bourne End Railway Station (SL8 5QH) Grid ref. SU 894 872

(S/E) From the station turn right past the Bourne End auction rooms then right again through the station car park. Go through the gate on the footpath beside the railway. Go down the steps, turn right under the railway bridge then turn left up the steps to cross the river.

(1) Turn right on the Thames Path and go through the gate. Continue along the riverside to the next swing gate then turn right along the waterway. Go through the gate.

(2) Before the railway bridge turn left. Almost immediately at the footpath sign turn right up the steps alongside the railway. At the top of the rise turn right over the railway.

(3) Keep ahead on the footpath across the golf course, being aware of flying golf balls. Pass to the right of a large shed and continue up the hill. Enjoy the view from the top of the hill before taking the left fork at a path junction between two fences.

(4) Cross the lane into the next field with a hedge on the right. At the end at a path junction bear right on the hedged path. Reaching a road junction keep ahead down Alleyns Lane. Go down the hill to the attractive hamlet of Cookham Dean Bottom.

(5) Turn right at the road junction passing the Farriery. At the road junction turn left up Warners Hill, which is quite steep. At the top of the hill at a road junction, Uncle Tom's Cabin is on the left.

(6) Cross the road and turn right along the grass verge. Re-join the road at Z-bends and watch out for traffic. Cross Pope's Lane and at the footpath sign on the right take the left fork and cross the green towards the Mole and Badger pub sign.

(7) Turn right along the track and at the second path junction turn left on descending track with a large cherry tree on the right.

(8) On reaching the lane by the Old Stables, turn sharp right along it and soon turn left on a public footpath. Cross the road into Job's Lane and continue up the hill. At the top turn right along the road, soon reaching the Winter Hill view point.

(9) Enjoy the vista as you walk along the grass at the edge of the road. The path then goes into a copse before re-joining the road. Pass Stonehouse Lane and soon take the track on the left.

(10) Keep ahead on the main track after the gate and at the next path junction take the left fork, still on the main track. Go down the hill enjoying the far-reaching views across the river.

(11) At the bottom of the hill at a path junction, bear right round the foot of the hill. Just after the junction with a path going directly up the hill, turn left by the seat, using the boardwalk if necessary.

(12) At the end of the boardwalk bear right on a grassy path across Cock Marsh to the corner. Go under the railway bridge through a gate, turn left then left again on the towpath.

(1) Turn left up the steps to cross the river, then right under the railway and left up the steps. Follow the
footpath back to the cap park and the station. (S/E)
