Description of the walk

Whether you’re coming from Carcassonne via the D118 or from Conques-sur-Orbiel, take the D901 cross-country road. Coming from Conques-sur-Orbiel, stop at the first sign for “Drystone shelters”, and if you’re coming from the D118, stop at the second sign for “Drystone shelters”.

(S/E) Leave the car park via a wide track that leads away from the road, heading northwards uphill. At the first junction, keep right; at the second, continue left. Keep going up this track, always in the same direction. In the distance, look out for the power line.

(1) Just before the line, turn right onto a fairly wide path. This will take you along the edge of the Rieusec Valley cliff. After a few twists and turns, it will lead you to a drystone shelter called “Les Cagarotes”. Continue along this path to the left, heading due south, for about a hundred metres.

(2) A fairly rocky goat track opens up on your left. Take it and continue, still along the cliff edge, until you reach the first fork with a track.

(3) Take this track to the right. Follow it, ignoring the paths branching off to the right or left, until you reach a vineyard. Turn left and follow the vineyard.

(4) At the first fork, take the far right-hand path, staying amongst the vineyards. Join the D901 and follow it to the right. Leave it 100 metres further on, continuing straight ahead along a tractor track. At the crossroads, turn left, but you can already see your cars; head down to the car park (S/E).

To find the car park, don’t hesitate to drive along the track until you reach the information sign. It’s a beautiful spot with typical local vegetation.

A really nice route, but best avoided in the height of summer. It gets too hot

Beautiful views. Best avoided in hot weather as the route is exposed to the sun.
Difficulty finding the track at point 3
Should we continue along the path by the cliff until the descent?
We must have turned right too early but made our way back to the cars

I haven’t done this hike yet, given the weather we’ve had. I’m thinking of going once spring is well and truly here. Best regards, R. Orjollet
