Description of the walk

Park in the car park of Compton Verney (CV35 9HZ). An alternative is to start at the layby at WM7 (Lighthorne Rd, Warwick CV35 9BX)

(S/E) Park in the car park, proceed back to the main entrance road, cross over the road to take the field path diagonally to the right.

(1) Take the entrance into The Rides Wood. When you exit the wood, take the second footpath to the right (not as sharp as the 1st right), descend downhill and eventually take steps to reach School Lane. Turn left down School Lane for about 100 metres.

(2) Take the first footpath right off School Lane. At the road, turn right, follow it to the left at the next bend, and after another right bend, take the footpath.

(3) At the footpath T junction turn left. The footpath is close to Compton Pools on your right. After about 300 metres, follow the path continuing straight, which veers away from the pools towards Oak Park Farm, and eventualy joining the driveway to reach Compton Hill road.

(4) At the road turn left up the hill for about 250 metres, taking the first turning on the right to Home Farm for 700 metres. At the farm turn right, then veer left after 300 metres, and continue for 1.6km to reach a crossroads.

(5) At the crossroads, cross straight over towards Lighthorn, and after nearly 1km reach a right turn.

(6) Turn right towards Hillfields and after about 400 metres turn right again on a footpath. After 1.2km reach a road.

(7) Cross over the road and continue down the footpath. Be carefull sometimes there are model plane enthusiasts here. Continue on for about 1.2km to reach the main entrance to Compton Verney. Then turn sharp right to return to the car park.(S/E)

Worth a visit

Combrook, also known as Combroke, has a rich history that dates back to at least the time of Henry I, circa 1086. The village was once the estate village of Compton Verney, providing living accommodation for the estate's servants. The original church in Combrook was built in the medieval period, and by 1279, it was identified in the Kineton hundred. The village remained part of the Kineton parish until 1858, when it was separated from Kineton and united with the ecclesiastical parish of Compton Verney. Combrook is known for its well-preserved estate houses and thatched buildings, reflecting its historical significance. The village's largest house once served as the school, and there has been a school on the site since at least 1641. Combrook's history is closely linked with the Compton Verney estate, and it is considered one of the best-preserved estate villages in the country.
