Montjoie Pass

Family hike to the Col de Monjoie (but it's still uphill) then a short off-trail exploration towards the peaks that border it.

Description of the walk

From Saint François Longchamp, head towards the Col de la Madeleine. In one of the last bends before the pass, you will find the Lauzière chairlift with parking space.

(S/E) The trail starts below the departure station. Cross it heading north and the trail starts on the left, heading east. You will then cross a mountain pasture and should take care not to disturb any animals that may be there.

(1) At the signpost, continue straight ahead on the trail towards Col de Montjoie, as indicated. You are now in Grande Pierraille, an area where black grouse may be found.

(2) At the new crossroads, a signpost indicates the right direction. Continue in the same direction and the climb begins. After a fairly steep section with hairpin bends along streams that can sometimes overflow onto the path, you will walk on a flat section. You will pass close to small mountain lakes.

(3) At the crossroads, continue in the same direction. The path then climbs gently. You will cross several small ridges before seeing the final section and the pass.

(4) You are now at the pass. You can climb a little on either side, especially as there is a path, not marked on the map, leading south-west.
On the left, you will reach a first pile of boulders, where the view is clearer, but the route to Roche Bénite seems uncertain. Descend back to the pass.

(4) Follow the path that leaves the pass to the northeast and arrives below the ridge line.

(5) Shortly after the hut, climb up following this ridge. There is no path.

(6) The slope becomes less steep as you reach a point where you can access Roc Rouge. The weather conditions prevented me from completing this last section. To descend back to the pass, it seemed easier to go slightly down the south-east slope rather than back along the ridge.

(4) Once back at the pass, we return via the ascent route to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

The equipment you need is that for a day or half-day outing. Walking sticks are very useful, especially on the descent.
Take water with you. There is water along the route, but there is no guarantee that it is drinkable.
Warm clothing and a windbreaker are not a luxury. The wind often blows quite strongly at the top and, as you are quite high up, it is not very warm.

Worth a visit

Between (3 and 4), you pass above "la mère de l'eau" (the mother of water), a spring captured and carried by the Grande Rigole to Lac de la Grande Léchère. A forest road runs alongside it.

Some additional information:
"1" The Col de Montjoie is not mentioned at the start of the chairlift. This can be confusing for some people, even though there is only one trail at this location. The pass is clearly marked on the first sign (1).
""2"" On the way back, to avoid the unpleasant descent on the stony path you took on the way there, I recommend returning via the path that goes around Crête Maxet. This adds 15-20 minutes to the hike. After the hairpin bends below the pass, turn right at the signpost "Crête Maxet" towards Lac de la Grande Léchère. At the next signpost, follow "La Perelle" St François Longchamp. The path is magnificent, comfortable, always overlooking Saint François Longchamp, and finally joins the path you took on the way up at the signpost (1) of the initial route.

A lovely hike with a fairly steep section to reach the plateau (and mini lakes) of La Platière.
Very beautiful view at the Col de Montjoie.
As an alternative to the descent, you can go around the Maxet ridge, which adds 1.3 km to the route, creates a circular path, offers varied landscapes and avoids the steep climb.

A pleasant route with moderate elevation gain (430 metres) but not too difficult. Beautiful views throughout the hike.
At the top of the Col de Monjoie, there is a beautiful view of the stone avalanche barriers and the other valley.
The route is busy in August but not overcrowded.
Thank you for this hike.

A very beautiful, pleasant little hike.
Pretty cows at the start and a superb herd of Rove sheep and goats with dogs at work (Border Collies and even two Patous, but they stayed close to the shepherd).
In the hut, there are some very interesting panels explaining how avalanche walls were built at the beginning of the last century.
