Description of the walk

Start: Princetown Village Car Park. Grid ref. SX 587 734
There is only one car park in the village, there is a charge to park, paying for the time stayed. There is a public transport service through the village, however, is not frequent, and the timetable may not be suitable, for this walk and its duration.

(S/E) To begin the walk; head West along the access road, opposite the Fire Station, and pick up the track through the trees for some 100m heading North-West, up on Station Road, with the Dartmoor Ale Brewery on the left. Continue heading North-West, and through the moor gate onto the moors. Handrail the wall on the right up to the TV mast (1 Km).

NOTE: Approximately 400m along the wall is a stile, part of the "Tyrwitt's Way", which leads to possible views of Dartmoor Prison. The two "standing stones" just above this point - one is the boundry marker for the "Prison Ground" and the one on the left is a marker stone - a boundary for the water catchment for Plymouth City of which there are many stones like this, in the area.

(1) At the TV mast and North Hessary Tor (enjoy the views), continue heading North-West, handrailing the wall again or using the access road, this will take you downhill to the cattle grid, turn left and continue handrailing the wall West around the rocky outcrop known as Rendlestone Tor. Follow the wall until the wall changes to a Northerly direction.

(2) At the corner of the wall, looking West to Hollow Tor 150m away, taking a bearing and aiming OFF to the North, walking towards a gully, the gully leads up to the Tor (this ensures getting to the objective, the Tor). Starting at the Tor, continue on a bearing West-South-West, to an un-adopted track towards Yellowmead Farm buildings.

(3) Turn left at the track and follow South to the old quarry spill tips.

(4) On reaching Foggintor Tor Quarries, go off track East, (see sign into an old quarry), this is worth a look. Return to the track, and continue South until the track is joined coming from North-West. This is part of the old railway line.

(5) At this point a bearing South-West to Swell Tor, this is another disused quarry and the approach is to the quarry's face side, again bearing slightly left of the highest point. At the quarry handrail around and down the quarry edge South.

(6) At the entrance to the quarry and disused sidings train track heads West 150m to large quarried and dressed stones 11 in number. These are corbels cut for the old London Bridge but mismeasured and never used.
From the corbels head South and down to the train tracks heading South-East and left, handrail the disused railway line until Yes Tor Bridge.

(7) Leave the track heading up and South contouring around Leeden Tor. At this point, it is important to "gain some height, then head on a South Easterly direction (there are no check-off points), this is to avoid lowland marshes. As the walk progresses up and around the hill. The main road should be visible (weather permitting), and a Tor, Black Tor, the nearest Tor in sight. At the main road and if on a slight hill turn left and East then handrail to the old Mile Stone marker on the roadside. Cross the main road South-East to Black Tor 150m.

(8) From Black Tor continue South-East down the hill to the stream. There is a metal bridge (a single shutter used as a crossing point). Cross over the stream heading North East, past an ancient Stone Row, and up to Hart Tor 800m.

(9) At Hart Tor, head North, keeping to the right-hand side of the valley. This will pass old stone circles and firing range marker posts to the main road, again, 800m. At the main road (Devil's Bridge) cross and head North, this time high and left of the valley, to the old disused rail track again 200m.

(10) At the track, turn right, handrail the track back into Princetown Village and the start point at the car park (S/E).
