Description of the walk

The starting point is by the Plassac tennis courts. As the route is circular, you can also start the route from any point.

(S/E) From the tennis courts, follow the gravel path down towards the estuary, then turn right. Walk along the riverbank, passing the open-air café.

(1) Continue along the riverbank, then follow the harbour’s right bank to the channel.

(2) Cross it via the footbridge, then head back up along the channel. Follow the path along the riverbank, then turn right past the trees; continue up the slope to the D669 and go through a metal barrier blocking the way for cars.

(3) Follow it to the right towards the centre of Plassac (Route de l’Estuaire). At the junction with Rue de la Taillande, there is an information board about flooding on the Gironde.

(4) Follow this street to the left, then take the first right (Rue du Chai), which turns into a tree-lined path. Follow the path to a small hamlet and a junction.

(5) Immediately turn left onto the signposted footpath, which continues through the forest and leads to a road. Continue straight ahead, keeping to the right. When you come within sight of a large house on your right, go straight on along the signposted path through the woodland. Walk alongside the vineyards (on your right) until you reach a junction with a tarmac road.

(6) Turn left, then immediately right onto Chemin des Cadeaux. Walk past the ruins of the old fortified house, taking the gravel path furthest to the right.

(7) Continue along the path and, at the fork, turn left through the woods and vineyards until you reach another fork.

(8) Turn right and rejoin the road. Turn right onto it and continue straight on until you reach the start of a left-hand bend.

(9) Turn right through the vineyards until you reach a farm and join the road (D133). Follow it to the right, along the hard shoulder. Cross the first junction (road coming from your left) with a mission cross and continue for about fifty metres.

(10) Before the next bend, follow the path on the left to the end, which descends through the vineyards. You will come to a road; take it to the right. Pass a cluster of houses and, at the next junction, take the road on the left for 200 m.

(11) Before the sewage treatment plant, take the gravel/dirt track on the right, which winds through the vegetation before joining a road.

(12) Follow the semi-circular section to the right before taking the gravel path on the left. You will reach a fork.

(13) The path splits into a gravel section on the right, a path running alongside the vineyard below, and a third path in the middle between a row of trees and the vines. Take the middle path, which runs under the trees and soon branches off to the left to join a road.

(14) At the junction with the tarmac road, you can:
- shorten the route by turning left.
- make a short circular loop by turning right. 300 m further on, cross a road, continue straight ahead, then turn left and head towards Hontagne, returning through the vineyards to the road

(15) Follow it to the right. Cross another road and, 500 m further on, take a small road leading back to the previous crossroads.

(14) Turn right onto the road, passing the Croix de Faux-Cœur (on your right).

(16) Continue along the road, passing a castle with a beautiful wrought-iron gate (on your left).

(17) A few steps further on, turn right onto the Chemin de la Vierge, which leads to a beautiful view and the Virgin of the Sailors.

(18) Continue straight along the path, then follow the road to the church. Turn right and discover the modern mosaics around the town hall, followed by the view of the remains of the ancient Gallo-Roman villa. The church and its forecourt are also worth a visit.

(19) Return to the main road and turn right to reach the
tennis club car park (S/E).

Notes

Additional circular loop
From (14), turn right onto Route de Chante Alouette. You’ll pass through Château Chante Alouette and take the grassy path leading downhill. You’ll then come to a junction with a signposted path on your left (green marker). Turn left and continue to the Route du Château d’Eau. Turn left and head back up the road to the Château d’Eau. Cross the junction and continue straight on to the Route de Beaumont. Don’t miss the superb view over the vineyards and the estuary. Head back up Route de Beaumont. The slope is quite steep and the road winds in zigzags until you reach the starting point of the circular route (14)

Picnics are possible near the tennis courts or at the harbour (tables and shade available). Please ensure you leave the area clean after your visit.

This route, combined with information from the Friends of Old Plassac (see Plassac websites), allowed us to enjoy a wonderful experience combining nature and history. The magnificent views of the estuary amazed many of us.
I would like to thank whoever created it.

A very beautiful walk with lovely views of the estuary; we really enjoyed it. The description was very well done. However, the map alone is not sufficient; we had doubts at several junctions, but with the description, it was fine.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.
It’s true that there are very few accessible public paths in the area that would avoid having to use these small, low-traffic roads.
I will, however, look into improving this.
Kind regards
