Description of the walk

Take the old (magnificent) road from Flassan to Sault and park easily at the hairpin bend (altitude 891m).

(S/E) Walk up the valley for 400m until you reach a fork.

(1) Take the track that branches off to the left in a hairpin bend. Follow it for about 800m, ignoring two tracks branching off to the right. Pass the Fontaine Breyguette (water not drinkable). Join a wide track and head down to the left for a good hundred metres.

(2) Turn onto the path that starts on the right. Follow it for about fifty metres; a few fallen trees might make you hesitate.... It winds its way through a magnificent natural forest where many plant species grow side by side. Pass numerous small firebreaks on your right and continue slightly uphill until you reach a track.

(3) Turn right to follow this gently descending track until you reach a track suitable for vehicles which climbs towards the Chapelle Saint-Jean (signposts – altitude 969m – Chapel 600m). Turn left to climb this track. A second signpost appears shortly afterwards: it is clearly in the wrong place as it should be further on.

(4) Continue straight along the track.

(5) Turn left and head for the chapel.

(6) Saint-Jean Chapel: a magnificent spot in the woodland, with pine, oak and beech trees dating back a century. Walk round the chapel and head north for about fifty metres for an extraordinary view of the summit of Mont Ventoux.

Continue along a very pretty path heading east, initially flat, then slightly downhill to reach the bottom of the valley. Continue to the right to climb back up.

(7) Take the path on the right, which widens as it climbs through the forest to a large crossroads. Take the level track on the right. Follow it for 300m to a completely open area offering superb views of the Nesque and Luberon plateaus.

(8) Turn left onto the track which descends slightly. When the slope becomes steeper, take a small path branching off to the right (shortcut) which rejoins the track about a hundred metres further down. Continue to the bottom of the valley.

(9) Turn right onto another track that descends the Ravin des Boyers.

(1) Continue straight on to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

The old road between Flassan and Sault offers magnificent views of the plain and Mont Ventoux.

A shaded walk, very pleasant in hot weather. Between points 2 and 3, a GPS is essential.

A lovely walk; the climb up to the chapel was quite steep; the return journey wasn’t very pleasant – a very stony path on the way down. Next time, I’ll do it the other way round!!!!

Important: we would never have found our way without the GPS on our phone. This is between points 2 and 3, where there are no longer any tracks. And you need a reliable GPS that doesn’t glitch, as you’re deep in the forest with no landmarks at all.
It’s also tricky to get back on track after St Jean Chapel. You often find yourself on paths that seem rarely used. But once you’re confident with your navigation equipment, it’s great fun.
The hike is lovely and now that we’ve finished it, we’ll do it again in the spring to get to know the route better because it’s well worth it, and you don’t really notice the elevation gain.

A short and easy walk, very pleasant in fine autumn weather. A mix of narrow old paths and wider tracks through the beech woods. Beautiful views with the sun low on the horizon, warming and dazzling. Tip: use the GPX track with a GPS, or better still the Visiorando app, otherwise you risk losing the trail at some point (towards the end of the first quarter of the route) and kicking yourself. The chapel site is magnificent.

The two of us completed this family-friendly walk on 9 June 2021.
A very pleasant walk with stunning views of Mont Ventoux near the Saint Jean chapel. A variety of vegetation with cool forests. A lovely day.
A minor issue from point 2 onwards: I took out the GPS to find it and put it away again at point 3.
Thanks to the author of this walk.

From point 2 to halfway along point 3, I mainly followed the route using GPS...

A pleasant route overall.
