A family-friendly and festive route from Le Grand Caunet

This is a very short hike leading to a refuge with a fireplace, along a ‘DFCI’ track. It is suitable for everyone, including children on bikes. It takes you to the Refuge des Gardes, which offers a stunning view of La Ciotat. The spot is very peaceful and welcoming. The short distance means you can pack plenty of food to enjoy a feast in the heart of nature.

Description of the walk

Start the hike at the Ciste car park

(S/E) At the far end of the car park is a forest gate. Take the wide path after the gate and pass cistern number 31. At the fork, stay on the main path, which is the "GC 116"; do not leave this path until you reach the refuge.

(1) At the junction, continue to the left.

(2) The refuge is on the left-hand side of the path. Return to the car park via the same route (S/E).

Notes

Several circular paths or loops are available in the area, but avoid the GR®51. It is closed off and fenced in several places due to the recent planting of vines.

An easy walk that won’t put too much strain on your ankles. Much of the route follows a DFCI track, and a lovely section takes you through the woodland on a narrow but very passable path, without the risk of getting scratched. Those who love the woods will be in their element. You can see the Bédoule watchtower, the Cabanon du Marquis and the Cabanon des Gardes (with opportunities for barbecues over a wood fire in the huts).

This hike starting from Grand Caunet will take you to a beautiful panorama facing the Pic de Bertagne and Sainte-Baume, from where you can look down on Cuges-les-Bains. From there, you will pass under the Barres de Font Blanche and climb back up into the Font Blanche forest via the Vallon de Carafa. On the way back, shortly before arriving, you will discover the Gouffre du Grand Caunet, a karst feature unique to the region.

Hike through beautiful, semi-shaded woodland, which is very pleasant in summer. Some of the climbs are a little steep but short, requiring a few breaks, especially at the start of the route. Two sections, in the form of treasure hunts, are on very varied terrain, but overall very passable with beautiful views.

A fairly classic hike that starts at Font Blanche and goes to the Chapelle Saint-André de Juhlans and then the Montounier, a hill that rises to 600 m. The route is particularly worthwhile for its beautiful views of Cuges-les-Pins and Sainte Baume, then the Bay of La Ciotat as you descend towards the Grand Caunet. The chapel has been very well restored, perhaps even a little too well. Don't miss the view behind it. There are some tough climbs along this route, which is not as easy as it looks.
